A high court in Imo State has scheduled December 16 to deliver judgment in the case of three men charged with kidnapping 20 prospective members of the National Youth Service Corps on Independence Day. The defendants, Usman Aliyu, Babangida Aliyu, and Mohammed Ali, were charged by the Department of State Services with kidnapping, illegal possession of firearms, and hostage-taking.
The trial judge, Justice Emeka Orafu, disclosed the judgment date on Friday after the defense lawyers announced the closure of their case. The defense team presented three witnesses, including Mohammed Ali, who testified and admitted to making a confessional statement to the DSS. Ali stated that his statement was made voluntarily and in the presence of his counsel.
Under cross-examination by the Director of Public Prosecution, Mr. Martins Udolwu, Mohammed Ali admitted to knowing Adamu Aliyu as an acquaintance and occasionally meeting him at mosques. Ali also revealed that he is a cattle herder who has lived in Aba, Abia State, for about two years. His co-defendants, Usman Aliyu and Babangida Aliyu, had previously admitted to making voluntary confessional statements to the DSS.
The defense team was given seven days to file their briefs, while the prosecution was given five days to respond. The court adjourned the matter to November 24 for the adoption of written addresses. The defendants' confessional statements and audio-visual recordings were presented as evidence by the DSS.
The kidnapping incident occurred on Independence Day, and the defendants were charged with serious offenses. The prosecution team, led by the DSS, has presented its case, and the defense team has concluded its defense. The court is now set to deliver judgment on December 16.
The case has garnered significant attention due to the severity of the offenses and the number of victims involved. The National Youth Service Corps has been working closely with the authorities to ensure the safe release of its members. The judgment is expected to bring closure to the case and provide justice for the victims and their families.
The court's decision to fix December 16 for judgment brings the case to a critical stage. The defense and prosecution teams have presented their cases, and the court is now poised to deliver a verdict.
