Barrister Kenneth Imansuaghon, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and former governorship aspirant, has expressed skepticism over Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo's claim of delivering 2.5 million votes for President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election. Imansuaghon stated that Okpebholo is deceiving President Tinubu with an unrealistic promise. He made these comments at an enlarged ADC senatorial meeting in Ewohimi, Esan South East Local Government Area.
Imansuaghon attributed the growing support for the ADC to the failure of the All Progressives Congress (APC) administration to address pressing issues such as insecurity, hardship, and poor infrastructure. He argued that Nigerians are yearning for a change of government. According to Imansuaghon, the ADC is confident of defeating the APC in Edo State, particularly in the Edo Central Senatorial District, due to the electorate's growing dissatisfaction with the APC-led governments.
Imansuaghon also praised former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, describing him as the most prepared presidential candidate for the 2027 election. He believes Atiku Abubakar is better positioned to rescue the country from its present challenges and return Nigeria to its lost glory. Imansuaghon's comments reflect a growing divide within the Edo State political landscape, with the ADC seemingly gaining traction ahead of the 2027 elections.
The ADC meeting in Ewohimi saw a large turnout, which Imansuaghon attributed to the growing dissatisfaction with the ruling APC. During the meeting, party leaders formally unveiled candidates for the 2027 general election and welcomed defectors from the APC, New Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The event was attended by notable party leaders, including Hon. Sylvester Ewanehi and Hon. Herberta Okonofua.
Imansuaghon also addressed the controversy surrounding a viral video featuring Edo APC chairman, Jarrett Tenebe, making remarks about AK-47 rifles. He stated that the ADC is not intimidated by threats and will rely on voters' support and their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) to challenge the ruling party. Imansuaghon emphasized that Nigerians will be ready to defend democracy and protect their votes.
Edo State ADC Chairman, Tony Alile, echoed Imansuaghon's sentiments, assuring party supporters that no individual can discourage eligible voters from exercising their constitutional rights. Alile called on security agencies to investigate the reported AK-47 remarks and emphasized that the PVC is a more powerful weapon than any firearm. He urged party leaders to intensify grassroots mobilisation ahead of the 2027 elections.
The ADC's growing momentum in Edo State is seen as a significant development in the lead-up to the 2027 presidential election. With Imansuaghon and Alile leading the charge, the party appears determined to challenge the APC's dominance in the state. As the election draws near, the political landscape in Edo State is likely to become increasingly charged, with the ADC emerging as a major contender.
