U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar, a Democrat from Minnesota, has won a fifth term in the U.S. Congress, representing the state's 5th Congressional District. Omar, who was born in Somalia and came to the United States as a refugee, defeated Republican challenger John Nagel in the heavily Democratic Minneapolis-area seat. With 216 of 217 precincts reporting, unofficial results from the Minnesota Secretary of State showed Omar with 261,920 votes, or 76.5%, compared with 55,698 votes, or 16.3%, for Nagel.

Omar has represented the district since 2019 and became the first Somali American elected to Congress when she won her first House race in 2018. The 5th District includes Minneapolis and several surrounding suburbs and is one of the most Democratic congressional districts in the country. Omar entered the general election after comfortably winning a five-candidate Democratic primary in August with more than 80% of the vote.

Omar's reelection came weeks after federal agents searched her Washington-area residence as part of an investigation into decades-old immigration and citizenship paperwork involving Omar and members of her family. The Justice Department has described the matter as an ongoing criminal investigation, while people familiar with the inquiry have said investigators are examining whether false information was provided on immigration documents.

No charges had been announced against Omar as of Election Day, and she has denied wrongdoing, accusing the Trump administration of using federal law enforcement against a political opponent. She called the October search an “outrageous abuse of power and an unprecedented escalation in the weaponization of federal law enforcement to target political enemies.”

The investigation has intensified a yearslong confrontation between Omar and President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly attacked Omar over immigration and other political issues. In 2019, Trump told Omar and other Democratic lawmakers to “go back” to the countries they came from. Omar's victory sends her back to Washington for a fifth two-year term in the House.

Nagel, a former Minnesota State Patrol trooper, campaigned on strengthening fraud controls, protecting Medicare and Medicaid, tightening border security, and supporting a strong national defense. Despite his efforts, Omar's strong presence in the district and her high-profile status as a Somali American in Congress likely contributed to her decisive victory.

In a statement on Facebook, Omar expressed her gratitude to her constituents, saying, “Thank you, Minnesota! I’m incredibly honored to continue to represent you in the People’s House with a resounding mandate. We will not allow Trump to silence us.” Her win is seen as a significant milestone for Somali Americans and a testament to her enduring popularity in the district.
