The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has taken on a new honorary role as Grand Patron of the partnership between the Police Complaint Response Unit (CRU) and the Eradication of Corruption and Abuse of Power Initiative (ECAPI). This recognition was announced during the formal commencement of the CRU-ECAPI partnership, aimed at broadening public awareness of the Police Complaint Response Unit and strengthening channels for constructive engagement between the Nigeria Police Force and the public.

The ceremony, which brought together a 15-man ECAPI delegation led by its President and Founder, Ambassador Mayor (Detective) Samuel Eniola Adam, and officials of the Police Complaint Response Unit, marked a significant milestone in police-public engagement. The Acting Head of the CRU, SP Awu Fidelis J., acknowledged the IGP's approval for the partnership and highlighted some of the initiatives undertaken by ECAPI to support the unit's public awareness efforts over the past three months.

ECAPI's initiatives to support the CRU's public awareness efforts have been extensive. The organisation has provided materials and publicity support, including CRU-crested T-shirts and peak caps, awareness jingles, banners and billboards, CRU lapel pins, a public address system, flyers and stickers. These efforts aim to make the CRU more visible to the public and improve awareness of the channels available for citizens to raise complaints and seek redress concerning police conduct.

The development comes amid growing emphasis on effective communication between law-enforcement institutions and the communities they serve. Complaint-response mechanisms provide an avenue for members of the public to present concerns and seek appropriate attention. IGP Disu expressed appreciation for the visit and recognition, commending ECAPI for its support for the CRU and urging the organisation to sustain its collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force.

The IGP stressed the importance of constructive partnerships between the police and responsible civil society organisations, highlighting their potential to contribute to strengthening accountability, professionalism and effective communication. He encouraged ECAPI to continue supporting initiatives capable of promoting constructive engagement between the police and the public. Two recognitions were presented to the IGP during the ceremony, acknowledging his leadership in addressing issues relating to police and public impunity.

The partnership between CRU and ECAPI is expected to expand awareness of the Police Complaint Response Unit and provide additional support for efforts aimed at promoting responsive, accountable and people-oriented policing. The recognition of IGP Disu as Grand Patron of the CRU-ECAPI partnership underscores the significance of collaborative efforts between law enforcement and civil society organisations in building a safer and more orderly society.

The event highlights the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to fostering constructive engagement with the public. By assuming the role of Grand Patron, IGP Disu has demonstrated his dedication to promoting accountability and responsiveness within the police force. The CRU-ECAPI partnership is poised to make a positive impact on police-public relations in Nigeria.
