The Inspectorate of Government (IG) has called for respect for court decisions in resolving the ongoing leadership dispute within the Lango Cultural Institution. This call follows an engagement between the Inspector General of Government, Lady Justice Naluzze Aisha Batala, and the Minister of Gender, Labour and Social Development, Lt. Gen. Henry Tumukunde. The meeting focused on addressing the dispute surrounding the position of Won Nyaci, the Paramount Chief of the Lango people.

The dispute centres on the election of Eng. Dr. Michael Moses Odongo Okune, which was challenged by clan leaders Denis Obia Acila and Benjamin Okii. In October 2024, the High Court in Lira nullified Odongo Okune's election, ruling that the process was unlawful. The court also directed the Government to recognise the former Paramount Chief, Yosam Odur Ebii. However, the Government has not yet taken action to implement the court's decision.

The Court of Appeal granted a stay of execution of the High Court judgment pending determination of the appeal in January 2025, allowing Odongo Okune to remain in the position of gazetted Paramount Chief. The Inspectorate says the engagement underscored the importance of respecting judicial decisions and ensuring that administrative actions concerning the recognition of cultural institutions comply with the law and existing court orders.

The IG's engagement with the government aimed to promote institutional accountability and constructive dialogue in resolving the dispute. The meeting also highlighted the need for Government institutions to work together to address the issue through lawful processes. The Inspectorate of Government plays a crucial role in promoting good governance and accountability in Uganda.

The Lango Cultural Institution has been embroiled in a leadership dispute for some time, with different factions vying for control. The dispute has caused tension among the Lango people, with some supporting Odongo Okune and others backing Yosam Odur Ebii. The IG's intervention is seen as a move to calm the situation and promote peace.

The Inspectorate of Government's call for adherence to the rule of law and respect for court decisions is seen as a significant step towards resolving the dispute. The institution has a mandate to investigate and address corruption and governance-related issues in Uganda. The engagement with the government demonstrates the Inspectorate's commitment to promoting good governance.

The outcome of the engagement between the IG and the government is yet to be seen. However, the Inspectorate's intervention is expected to help resolve the dispute amicably. The Lango people are eagerly waiting for a peaceful resolution to the leadership dispute, which has affected the region's social and economic development.
