The Managing Director of the International Finance Corporation (IFC), Makhtar Diop, has announced a significant investment in Ghana's Volta Ecological Zone. The IFC will invest $100 million in the zone, with an additional $50 million allocated for constructing a railway that will link Ghana to Sahelian countries. This announcement was made on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York on September 21, 2026.

During a meeting with Ghana's Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, Makhtar Diop commended Ghana's progress in addressing debt and inflation pressures. He noted that Ghana has made significant strides in recent years, implementing measures to structurally address these economic challenges. This progress has created a more favorable environment for attracting investment from both domestic and international investors.

The IFC's investment pipeline in Ghana currently stands at $1.2 billion, with a focus on key sectors such as energy, infrastructure, and agriculture. The corporation aims to support Ghana's economic transformation by attracting more domestic and international private capital. Makhtar Diop emphasized that job creation is a top priority, and the IFC is committed to supporting sectors that can generate employment opportunities.

Makhtar Diop also highlighted the IFC's interest in supporting Ghana's poultry industry, which currently relies heavily on imports. He believes that Ghana has the potential to become self-sufficient in poultry production, and the IFC is willing to support local production. This approach aligns with the corporation's goal of helping countries increase domestic production of goods that are currently imported.

The IFC's Local Champions initiative aims to strengthen businesses and investors from Africa to expand investment within the continent. This initiative is part of the corporation's efforts to strengthen domestic and regional private-sector capacity while reducing the vulnerability of African economies to external shocks. Makhtar Diop noted that this initiative can help create jobs and make economies more resilient.

During his meeting with Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, Makhtar Diop discussed new ideas for attracting investors from outside Ghana while supporting existing Ghanaian businesses. The IFC is committed to working with the Ghanaian government to identify opportunities to support the country's economic transformation. The corporation's approach focuses on indigenizing production in selected sectors, which can create jobs and make economies more resilient.

The latest investment announcement comes as the Ghanaian government seeks to position the country as a more attractive destination for private capital. The implementation of economic reforms and measures to restore macroeconomic stability has created a more favorable environment for investment. The IFC's investment pipeline is expected to increase, with a focus on supporting Ghana's economic development and job creation.
