The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) has launched an investigation into a presiding officer at the Shad Mashologu Junior Primary School voting station in Mdantsane. The officer allegedly gave a lift to an ANC party agent on Monday while conducting door-to-door special votes. According to IEC Eastern Cape electoral officer Kayakazi Magudumana, the incident involved the presiding officer driving around the community with party agents wearing ANC regalia.

The IEC received a complaint from various political parties regarding the incident. It is alleged that ANC T-shirts were handed out during the home visits. The presiding officer was subsequently put aside and told not to continue with her duties pending an investigation. By late Monday afternoon, preparations for a hearing into the matter were underway. The presiding officer reportedly agreed that she had given a lift to party agents.

A video circulating on social media showed the presiding officer being confronted by representatives from various political parties. The United Democratic Movement (UDM) and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) were among the parties that lodged the complaint. UDM national fundraiser and planner Pumeza Mankabane stated that a decision was made to remove the presiding officer and the party agent.

The EFF BCM regional co-ordinator, Mziyanda Hlekiso, described the conduct as a "gross violation of the Electoral Act". Hlekiso demanded the immediate expulsion of the presiding officer, stating that her actions compromised the integrity of the voting process. The EFF argued that the incident would render the elections in the voting district not free and fair.

IEC Eastern Cape electoral officer Kayakazi Magudumana confirmed that a complaint had been lodged against the presiding officer. Magudumana stated that the issue was brought to provincial office management, leading to the decision to temporarily remove the presiding officer from her duties. An investigation into the incident was underway.

The incident has raised concerns about the impartiality of presiding officers during the electoral process. The IEC's investigation aims to determine the extent of the presiding officer's actions and whether they compromised the integrity of the voting process. The outcome of the investigation is expected to be made public in due course.

The IEC has a critical role in ensuring the integrity and fairness of the electoral process. The commission's ability to investigate and address incidents such as this one will be crucial in maintaining public trust in the electoral process.
