Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama has announced a $450 million expansion of its Montgomery facility, aimed at adding engine capacity for hybrid and extended-range electric vehicle powertrains and tooling for new models. The project, dubbed "Project Game Changer," was unveiled on October 28, 2026, with Governor Kay Ivey and Korean Ambassador Kang Kyung-wha present. This investment is expected to create 53 new jobs at the plant.

The expansion will enable the production of the new Tucson and refreshed Santa Fe models at the Montgomery plant. Hyundai expects the new Tucson to begin production before the end of 2026, while the Santa Fe EREV is slated for launch in the first half of 2027. The governor's office listed $412.9 million in capital investment and 53 full-time positions, while Hyundai's own figures cite a total spend of about $450 million.

The 53 new jobs represent a capital cost of roughly $7.8 million per position, comparable to Hyundai's 2018 engine-head plant expansion in Alabama. The Montgomery expansion accounts for about 1.7 percent of Hyundai Motor Group's $26 billion pledge to U.S. operations for 2025-2028, targeting roughly 25,000 new direct jobs. The larger components of the U.S. plan include a $5.8 billion steel mill in Louisiana and the $7.6 billion Georgia Metaplant.

Hyundai's existing Montgomery plant employs 4,200 workers and generates more than $5 billion in annual economic impact, contributing about $100 million in state tax revenue and $12 million locally. The company has not disclosed a general contractor, floor-area specifications, or a construction start date for the expansion. No incentive amount from the state has been announced.

It remains unclear whether all 53 positions are net new hires. Hyundai has not indicated whether the Alabama-built Tucson will be exported to Canada, a market currently sourcing the model from Mexico and South Korea due to tariff measures. The company's investment in the Montgomery plant is expected to have a significant impact on the local economy.

The expansion will add flexibility to the Montgomery plant rather than new vehicle-assembly capacity. Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama is a significant contributor to the state's economy, and this investment is expected to further solidify its presence in the region. The project is seen as a major development in the automotive industry in the United States.

The investment in the Montgomery plant is part of Hyundai's broader strategy to expand its presence in the United States. The company is committed to creating new jobs and stimulating economic growth in the region. The expansion is expected to have a positive impact on the local community and the state's economy as a whole.
