Hundreds of athletes took part in the maiden Godwin Adukpo Hill Challenge in Ho, Ghana, on Saturday. The 10-kilometre race was designed to test endurance, resilience, and determination. Participants battled the demanding uphill terrain, with the youngest finishers, aged six and eight, adding a special touch to the competition. The youngest finishers, six-year-old Nhyira Fofana Nyafele and eight-year-old Edem Extra Senorgbe, successfully completed the demanding 10-kilometre course. Their feat attracted admiration and applause from spectators, officials, and fellow participants. The event was commended by Mr Emmanuel Keteku, former Headteacher of Anlo Senior High School and former Volta Regional Director of Education.
Mr Keteku praised Mr Godwin Atsu Adukpo, the Convener of the challenge, for his vision and initiative. Mr Adukpo's dream is to revive long-distance running in the Volta Region and create opportunities for young athletes to develop their talents. He urged participants to train consistently, remain disciplined, and continue improving their performances if they wanted to progress in athletics.
The National Sports Authority (NSA), Volta Region, commended the athletes and described the maiden event as the beginning of bigger opportunities for hill running and athletics in the region. The Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) was represented by its Deputy General Secretary, Mr Ken Odeng, and Administrator, Mr Francis Ofori.
The results of the competition were as follows: in the Women's Category, Ezeani Emmanuella finished with a time of 42:33.17, Amuzu Nancy with 44:50.40, and Tamekloe Joy with 44:50.23. In the Men's Category, Ejingma Simon finished with a time of 34:31.93, Eric Danyo with 46:04.52, and Israel Kudialor with 48:04.99.
The Under-12 Girls category saw Francisca Agbesi finish with a time of 1:13:19, Makafui Nyado with 1:16:18, and Mawufemor Doh with 1:17:09. The Under-12 Boys category results were not fully provided, but Klu Kingsley and Rapha Atsu Adukpo were mentioned as participants. The youngest finishers, Nhyira Fofana Nyafele and Edem Extra Senorgbe, were also recognized.
