HoneyWorld has introduced a new approach to dry bulk exports at the Port of Tema with the successful launch of the RAM Revolver Containerised Bulk Handling (CBH) System. The system, implemented in partnership with the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), enables bulk cargo to be moved directly from its storage location into a vessel's hatch. This initiative supports GPHA's drive towards cleaner and more environmentally responsible port operations.
The traditional method of bulk cargo handling at Tema Port involves discharging shea nuts onto the quay apron before loading them into a vessel using grabs. This exposes the commodity to additional handling and increases the risk of spillage into the sea. The RAM Revolver CBH System offers an alternative by using specialised 20ft Revolver Containers that are delivered to a client's warehouse for loading.
The Revolver Containers are sealed and transported to the quayside, where a crane-mounted RAM Revolver grips and lifts each container, opens its lid, and rotates it 360 degrees to discharge the commodity directly into the vessel's hatch. The empty container is then returned to the warehouse for reuse. This process eliminates the need to dump loose shea nuts onto the quay apron before vessel loading.
The introduction of the RAM Revolver CBH System follows GPHA's efforts to identify more efficient and environmentally responsible ways of handling bulk cargo. The port authority engaged private-sector operators to explore alternatives to traditional bulk handling, leading to the Honeyworld-GPHA partnership. The Director of Port, Tema, Mr Tabon Zuma, noted that the system has changed the traditional form of handling shea nuts.
According to Mr Zuma, the dirty cargo charge associated with traditional bulk handling does not apply since the shea nuts are discharged directly into the vessel without being dumped onto the quay apron. He also noted that the sealed containers make cargo diversion more difficult. The successful implementation of the system marks an important milestone in GPHA's commitment to innovation.
HoneyWorld's bulk export solution is supported by its warehousing, road freight services, and equipment fleet, including reach stackers, payloaders, forklifts, and a conveyor belt with weighing capability. These capabilities enable the company to coordinate cargo handling more efficiently. The company continues to explore and adopt practical solutions that enhance its service delivery.
The launch of the RAM Revolver CBH System at Tema Port is a significant step towards advancing bulk export operations in Ghana. The system provides a cleaner and more efficient way of handling bulk cargo, supporting the country's bulk exporters and reinforcing HoneyWorld's position as a logistics solutions provider of choice.
