Homabay Governor Gladys Wanga and her administration have come under fire after sharing AI-generated artistic impressions of a hospital block under construction in the county. The governor flagged the construction of the facility and provided an update on her social media accounts, sharing flashy images of what the hospital would look like upon completion. The images were intended to celebrate one of her achievements that will advance quality healthcare in the county.

However, netizens quickly pointed out that the images shared by the governor and her administration had glaring visual distortions. Some images depict people with three legs, while others show individuals with their legs unnaturally twisted or facing backwards, creating bizarre and anatomically impossible appearances. The official Homa Bay County X account also shared the AI-generated images, which sparked a heated debate on social media.

The backlash against the governor's administration intensified as netizens noted that the images were generated using AI. Some of the images have distorted body proportions and physical features, turning what may have been intended as realistic depictions into awkward illustrations. The governor's administration had intended to showcase the hospital project as one of its achievements, but the AI-generated images had an opposite effect.

Amid the backlash, humor also found its way into the conversation. A section of netizens noted that being a surgical unit, the people depicted in the images with three legs could be those going for surgery to remove the third leg. One user, @philkan87, commented, "Ni uchungu sana. Hii ni surgical unit... And that patient with three legs is going for surgery to remove one leg…" The comment was a sarcastic take on the governor's administration's use of AI-generated images.

The criticism of the governor's administration extended beyond the AI-generated images. Netizens turned the heat on Governor Wanga, who is a close ally of President William Ruto, and began to question her achievements and compare her scorecard with those of her peers. Some joked that governors who have consistently ranked among the best performers, including Kimani Wamatangi (Kiambu) and Irungu Kang'ata (Murang'a), have set the bar high.

Others seized the opportunity to remind the governor that launching grand projects does not come close to launching a completed project. They pointed out that some governors have been opening finished projects since their first year in office, while others are still launching projects that are yet to be completed. The criticism of Governor Wanga's administration also extended to past projects, including a water kiosk and a two-door pit latrine constructed at a cost of Sh500,000.

The controversy surrounding the AI-generated images has raised questions about the use of technology in governance and the importance of accuracy and authenticity in public communication. Governor Wanga's administration has not commented on the backlash, but the incident has sparked a conversation about the role of technology in governance and the need for transparency and accountability.
