The High Court Criminal Division in Kampala has resumed the hearing of the treason case against retired Colonel Dr. Kiiza Besigye, Hajj Obeid Lutale, and Captain Denis Oola Oyar. The hearing, presided over by Justice Emmanuel Baguma, saw the second prosecution witness, Medadi Elisa Ssentanda, present evidence. Ssentanda, who claims to be computer literate with over 10 years of experience in transcribing audio and video recordings, presented a flash disk containing transcripts of five meetings.

According to Ssentanda, the transcripts were prepared by carefully listening to the audio recordings while watching the corresponding videos to identify the different speakers. The first recording, he said, lasted approximately two hours and 25 minutes and involved four speakers. The witness also presented a transcript of a video showing three men entering a room, taking their seats, and beginning a conversation. However, he noted that the corresponding audio for this video was unavailable.

During cross-examination, Ssentanda acknowledged that some portions of the recordings were indistinct, making it difficult to establish exactly what was said. He specifically noted that parts of the second meeting were unclear. The witness's testimony was crucial in the ongoing trial, with the prosecution relying on the transcripts as evidence against the accused.

Earlier, Justice Baguma had ruled on a defence objection concerning the sources of the recordings used to prepare the transcripts. After considering written submissions from both the prosecution and defence, the judge allowed Ssentanda to proceed with presenting his transcription report. The ruling enabled the hearing to continue, with the prosecution presenting its case.

The treason case against Besigye, Lutale, and Oyar has been ongoing, with the prosecution presenting various pieces of evidence. The accused, who are alleged to have been involved in treasonous activities, have been in court for several sessions. The case has garnered significant attention, with many following the developments closely.

The hearing is continuing, with further evidence expected to be presented. The prosecution's case relies heavily on the transcripts and recordings, which the defence has challenged. The court's decision on the matter remains pending, with the judge expected to make a ruling based on the evidence presented.

The case highlights the ongoing efforts by the Ugandan judiciary to address issues of national security and treason. The court's proceedings demonstrate the importance of due process and the rule of law in the country's justice system. As the hearing continues, many will be watching closely for the outcome of the trial.
