Heavy Security Deployed for Sh8.2bn Meth Destruction in Mombasa

Heavy security has been deployed at the Bamburi factory in Kisauni, Mombasa, ahead of the destruction of an Sh8.2 billion methamphetamine haul seized in the Indian Ocean. The exercise, led by Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, aims to send a strong message to drug traffickers operating in the region. The vessel carrying the meth was intercepted on the high seas while carrying the suspected narcotics.

The Sh8.2 billion haul is linked to a case before the Shanzu Law Courts, where six suspects have been charged with trafficking 1,036.044kg of methamphetamine. The suspects, identified as Jaseem Darzadeh Nia, Nadeem Jadgal, Hassan Baloch, Raheem Baksh, Imran Baloch, and Imtiyaz Daryay, are accused of trafficking in narcotic drugs contrary to Section 4(a)(ii) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (Control) Act.

The destruction of the haul takes place as the suspects' case enters the defence stage, with security agencies maintaining a heightened presence around the exercise. The prosecution recently secured a major breakthrough after Shanzu Chief Magistrate Anthony Mwicigi ruled that the six have a case to answer. The magistrate found that the prosecution had established a prima facie case, paving the way for the suspects to be placed on their defence under Section 211 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

The ruling followed the presentation of 12 prosecution witnesses and the closure of the prosecution's case. The six suspects are now set to present their defence. The court's decision to allow the destruction of the seized methamphetamine was made after it was established that it was the safest option as the case proceeds.

The exercise is being carried out in accordance with the law, and the Interior Cabinet Secretary, Kipchumba Murkomen, is leading the process. The government has assured the public that the destruction of the haul will be done in an environmentally friendly manner.
