The Central Equatoria State Ministry of Health recently collaborated with various stakeholders to promote healthy living among communities in the state. The Ministry joined forces with the youth, sports, and professional health organisations to highlight the importance of physical fitness, disease prevention, and healthier lifestyles. This collaboration was showcased during the successful "6K Run for Health" event held in Juba.
The 6-kilometre run, which started and ended at Buluk Playground, was jointly organised by the Central Equatoria State Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, the Ministry of Health, the Pharmaceutical Society of South Sudan (PSSS), and the Juba Local Athletics Association. The event brought together health professionals, athletes, young people, and members of the public, demonstrating the power of partnerships in promoting public health.
The Central Equatoria State Minister of Health, Joyce Bakwa Agole, attended the event and commended the organisers and participants for bringing different sectors together through sport to promote public health. She emphasised the importance of collaboration between the health, youth, sports, and professional sectors in strengthening health awareness and encouraging communities to take greater responsibility for their well-being.
The 6K Run combined physical exercise with health awareness, encouraging participants to view regular physical activity as part of disease prevention and general well-being. Regular physical activity is widely recognised as an important component of a healthy lifestyle, helping to improve cardiovascular fitness, strengthen muscles and bones, support healthy body weight, and contribute to the prevention of several non-communicable diseases.
The Ministry of Health encouraged members of the public, particularly young people, to incorporate physical activity and healthy living practices into their daily routines. The participation of health professionals alongside athletes and members of the public provided an opportunity to connect messages on prevention with practical physical activity, highlighting the importance of a multi-sectoral approach to health promotion.
The organisers' partnership brought together institutions with different responsibilities but a common public health objective. The Ministry of Health provided the health-promotion component, while the Ministry of Culture, Youth, and Sports contributed to the mobilisation of young people and the promotion of sporting activities. The Pharmaceutical Society of South Sudan and the Juba Local Athletics Association also played crucial roles in the initiative.
The successful 6K Run ended with a renewed call for stronger cooperation among health, sports, youth, and professional institutions to promote healthier and more physically active communities across Central Equatoria State. Such initiatives can help strengthen public awareness around preventive healthcare while creating opportunities for people to participate in activities that support physical and social well-being.
