Ghana's Health Minister, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has directed the immediate deployment of 40 additional health workers to the Weija Children’s Specialist Hospital. The move aims to strengthen the facility's workforce as it expands its services as a specialist referral centre. The hospital, which has a 120-bed capacity, is now operational and currently provides outpatient and emergency services.
The Health Minister gave the directive after inspecting the hospital, where he said most of the required equipment had been installed, allowing management to expand the range of services being offered. The deployed health workers comprise 10 medical doctors and 30 nurses and midwives. This move is expected to address the current workforce shortage at the hospital. As a referral centre, the Minister noted that it is the first of its kind as a stand-alone children’s referral centre in Ghana.
