South Korean company HD Hyundai has delivered what it claims to be the world's first container ship designed to eliminate manual securing of cargo. The 13,000 TEU vessel, which operates on a dual-fuel methanol system, was delivered to French company CMA CGM. The ship features an innovative hybrid system developed by HD Hyundai that ensures container stability without traditional securing methods.

Traditional container ships rely on crew members or port workers to secure containers using steel rods and other securing equipment. However, HD Hyundai's new system eliminates this labor-intensive task by extending cell guides above the ship's deck, allowing containers to be secured in place without traditional securing methods. This innovation centers around a portable bench, a standard structure installed between cell guides.

The portable bench is a standard unit that matches the dimensions of a 40-foot standard container, enabling port cranes to handle it as part of routine cargo handling operations. Containers placed outside the cell guides are secured directly to the ship's structure using a new twist-lock mechanism. According to HD Hyundai, this design increases deck cargo capacity by over 10% compared to similar ships.

The new design also improves operational stability in harsh weather conditions. The company conducted sea trials in September, which showed reduced vibration levels compared to ships using traditional hatch covers and securing systems. HD Hyundai's technology has been presented to the IMO's Subcommittee on Cargoes and Containers in 2024 and has since obtained multiple patents.

HD Hyundai Heavy Industries developed the core technology and verified its efficiency, while HD Hyundai Samho handled detailed design and construction work. The company plans to expand the use of this technology, which eliminates manual securing, to smaller and medium-sized ships in the near future.

The innovative system developed by HD Hyundai has the potential to transform the container shipping industry by reducing labor-intensive tasks and improving operational efficiency. With its increased cargo capacity and improved stability, this ship is expected to set a new standard for container vessels.

The delivery of this ship marks a significant milestone for HD Hyundai, demonstrating its commitment to innovation and technological advancement in the maritime industry. As the company continues to develop and implement new technologies, it is likely to have a lasting impact on the shipping industry.
