The Eastern Cape Hawks have arrested a 36-year-old suspect in connection with an alleged kidnapping in Bizana. The incident occurred on Friday, September 25, 2026, when a young man was reportedly abducted following a dispute over money. The victim's mother received a telephone call demanding ransom money in exchange for her son's release. The Hawks' Serious Organised Crime Investigation (SOCI) and Crime Intelligence collaborated to apprehend the suspect.

According to Eastern Cape Hawks spokesperson Warrant Officer Ndiphiwe Mhlakuvana, the suspect was arrested on Friday, October 9, during a crime intelligence-led operation. The operation was conducted in collaboration with Crime Intelligence and Mbizana Visible Policing (VISPOL). Police intercepted and arrested an individual who had allegedly been sent to collect the ransom. The victim later managed to escape while the alleged suspects were reportedly preoccupied with evading the police.

The case was taken over by the Hawks, which pursued further investigative leads and enlisted the assistance of Crime Intelligence to trace the individuals allegedly involved in the incident. The suspect was located and arrested at Highland View in Bizana during the operation on Friday at about 10:30 am. His cell phone was seized for further examination.

The suspect is expected to appear before the Mbizana Magistrate's Court on Monday, October 12, 2026, on a charge of kidnapping. Mhlakuvana said police were working to trace other suspects allegedly implicated in the incident. Investigations are continuing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the alleged kidnapping.

The incident highlights the growing concern over kidnappings in South Africa. Recently, SAPS recorded 17 kidnapping cases linked to human trafficking between January and March 2026. Experts have warned that victims can be groomed and exploited without ever being kidnapped.

Kidnapping cases have been on the rise in various parts of the country. In Gauteng, Kempton Park recorded 76 kidnapping cases between April and June, the highest tally in the province. This has prompted lawmakers to call for stronger policing and intelligence-led investigations.

The Hawks' arrest in the Bizana kidnapping case demonstrates the efforts of law enforcement agencies to combat crime. The suspect's arrest and the recovery of evidence, including his cell phone, are significant developments in the case. The Hawks will continue to work to bring all suspects to justice.
