The Suez Canal Authority and Hapag-Lloyd are working to strengthen their partnership, with several of the shipping company's services resuming passage through the Egyptian waterway. A virtual meeting between Suez Canal Authority head Admiral Ossama Rabie and Hapag-Lloyd CEO Rolf Habben Jansen explored the prospects of this renewed cooperation, as well as new investment and maritime training opportunities.
According to the Suez Canal Authority, Hapag-Lloyd has already resumed three shipping services through the canal, with additional routes from the Far East expected to follow. The shipping company's return is seen as a strategic move amid rising fuel prices and the lack of sustainable alternative routes. Admiral Rabie emphasized that the canal is ready to provide necessary maritime and logistical services to transiting vessels.
Ossama Rabie expressed his desire for all Hapag-Lloyd services to resume passage through the Suez Canal, citing the waterway's readiness to support increased traffic. He also highlighted the importance of direct dialogue with Hapag-Lloyd's leadership, which opens up new avenues for coordination and expertise exchange. This comes as Hapag-Lloyd has shown interest in investing and expanding its activities in Egypt.
Rolf Habben Jansen welcomed the resumption of Suez Canal passages but noted that continued cooperation depends on favorable conditions. He emphasized that the Suez Canal remains an attractive route when circumstances permit its use. The CEO proposed establishing a joint working group to explore investment opportunities and identify new areas of cooperation that benefit both parties.
Discussions during the meeting included a potential partnership between the Suez Canal Authority's Maritime Training and Simulation Academy and the Damietta Alliance container terminal, also known as "Tahya Misr 1", at Damietta port. This collaboration aims to train ship captains, with Hapag-Lloyd being a major investor in the terminal.
Juan Pablo Richards, Hapag-Lloyd's regional head for Southern Europe, reaffirmed the interest of both parties in in-depth discussions on investment opportunities. He also praised the Suez Canal's ability to navigate successive crises while pursuing its modernization program for the waterway and its fleet.
The renewed partnership between the Suez Canal Authority and Hapag-Lloyd is seen as a positive development for Egypt's maritime sector. The two parties are expected to work closely together to identify areas of mutual benefit and explore new opportunities for cooperation.
