Lagos State's Deputy Governor, Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, has formally announced his candidacy for the 2027 gubernatorial election, emphasizing his unmatched institutional experience and deep comprehension of the state's historical and political landscape. Speaking at the 70th Harvest Anniversary and Thanksgiving Service of the Cherubim and Seraphim Society in Ese-Ofin, Lagos, Hamzat argued that effective governance requires more than superficial ambition. He stressed that a lack of foundational knowledge would inevitably cripple any administration.
Hamzat highlighted his journey into public service, sharing an anecdote about being headhunted from the diaspora by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2005. Tinubu, who was then the Governor of Lagos State, invited Hamzat to join his government, allowing him to rise through the ranks over two decades. Hamzat has worked as Commissioner for Science and Technology, Commissioner for Works, and currently as Deputy Governor of the state. He emphasized that this experience has given him a thorough understanding of Lagos' history and politics.
With the election cycle approaching, Hamzat warned Lagosians about populist campaign rhetoric, cautioning voters to scrutinize candidates thoroughly. He reminded them that Lagos' economic stability is inextricably linked to Nigeria's, with the state contributing over 33% of the country's GDP. Hamzat emphasized that Lagos cannot be taken for granted and that inexperienced individuals should not be allowed to rule the state.
Hamzat appealed for national unity and spiritual perseverance, urging citizens to keep praying for Nigeria's progress. He stated that God has a purpose for creating Nigeria and encouraged citizens to work together towards a common goal. The event, which marked the 70th anniversary of the Cherubim and Seraphim Society, was attended by top government functionaries, traditional rulers, APC chieftains, commissioners, local government chairmen, and members of the Lagos State House of Assembly.
The event was also attended by prominent dignitaries, including Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, the wife of the Lagos State Governor. She expressed her delight at returning to the parish after a long absence and acknowledged the local roots of the state's party leadership. Sanwo-Olu thanked God for giving Lagos someone like Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi, the Lagos State APC Chairman, who came from the parish.
Prominent cleric Rev. Esther Ajayi, Founder of the Love of Christ Generation Church, echoed the call for spiritual intervention in governance. She urged the congregation to stand by their leaders and prayed for continued divine guidance across the nation. Ajayi noted that it is through God's mercy that people can excel in life.
The Lagos State APC Chairman, Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi, explained that the platinum jubilee was structured to positively impact the immediate community. The celebration included a Night of Praise, a medical outreach program, and the grand finale attended by Hamzat and other dignitaries. Ojelabi advised religious leaders to live by Christian values and urged Nigerians to maintain unwavering faith in God.
