GWM South Africa has introduced a new plug-in-hybrid derivative of its popular P300 double-cab bakkie, marking the first electrified model in the Chinese bakkie range. The GWM P300 Hi4 model combines a 2.0-liter turbo petrol motor with an electric motor, producing a system output of 310kW and 750Nm. This new model features a selectable four-wheel drive system and three power modes, including electric, hybrid, and intelligent modes.
The P300 PHEV's powertrain consists of a 180kW petrol engine paired with a 130kW electric motor. The electric motor enables the bakkie to achieve a pure electric range of up to 115km. In hybrid mode, the vehicle optimizes fuel efficiency for longer distances and highway use, with a combined fuel consumption rating of 2.4 l/100km. The battery can be charged from 30% to 80% in approximately 18 minutes.
The new GWM P300 PHEV features a range of innovative technologies, including a terrain response system with an off-road expert mode and an electronically controlled rear differential lock. The vehicle also offers underbody protection, 200mm of ground clearance, and impressive approach, departure, and breakover angles. Additionally, the bakkie has a towing capacity of 3,500kg and a dedicated trailer driving mode.
In terms of design, the P300 PHEV boasts a sportier look, characterized by a black front grille, blacked-out headlamp and tail-lamp clusters, and black 18-inch alloy wheels. The interior features premium amenities, including a 15.6-inch touchscreen display, 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, and leather upholstery-trimmed seats. The vehicle also offers advanced driver assistance systems, such as automatic emergency braking and adaptive cruise control.
Safety is a top priority in the P300 PHEV, with standard safety systems including automatic emergency braking, junction assist, and six airbags. The vehicle also features a range of convenience features, such as a wireless phone charger, sunroof, and automatic climate control. Furthermore, the bakkie has a seven-year/200,000km warranty, eight-year/150,000km high-voltage battery warranty, and seven-year/75,000km service plan.
The GWM P300 PHEV retains the body-on-frame chassis design and double-wishbone front suspension of its predecessors. The vehicle's part-time four-wheel-drive system offers 2H, 4H, and 4L settings, making it suitable for various driving conditions. Additionally, the bakkie features a 3+2 leaf-spring configuration and a rigid rear axle, ensuring durability and load-carrying capability.
The new GWM P300 PHEV is priced at R914,900. With its impressive features, innovative technologies, and competitive pricing, this plug-in-hybrid bakkie is set to make a significant impact in the South African market.
