Gunmen launched a deadly attack on Fulani herders in Plateau State on Sunday evening, resulting in the deaths of two individuals and injuries to six others. The incident occurred around Total Filling Station, Yelwa Club Junction, Bukuru, in the Jos South Local Council of Plateau State. According to the state chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, Ibrahim Yusuf Babayo, the victims were attacked at about 5:30 p.m. while returning from a cattle market.

This latest incident is not an isolated case, as it follows a similar attack on herders around Kassa community in Barkin Ladi Local Council, where five persons were killed and one injured less than two weeks ago. Babayo recalled that on September 20, 2026, five Fulani herders were killed around Kassa in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area while returning from the same market. He also mentioned a previous attack near Conoil Filling Station in December last year.

The Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria has condemned the attack and urged security agencies to track down those responsible and bring them to justice. Babayo expressed concern that the latest incident represents yet another attack against innocent herders who were peacefully returning from their lawful business activities. He emphasized that the victims had been rushed to hospital, with one person still missing.

The association has called on the Plateau State Government, the Nigeria Police Force, Operation Safe Haven, the Department of State Services, and other security agencies to strengthen security along the Kara-Bukuru market route and take measures to prevent further attacks. Babayo urged members to remain calm, law-abiding, and to avoid any form of retaliation, expressing confidence that the security agencies will carry out a professional investigation and ensure that justice is served.

The Plateau State Police Command has condemned the incident and commenced an investigation. The police have urged residents to go about their lawful activities and report suspicious activities to the police. The command's response aims to reassure the public and demonstrate efforts to address the security concerns.

Ibrahim Yusuf Babayo reiterated that MACBAN remains committed to peaceful coexistence with communities across Plateau State, emphasizing that lasting peace can only be achieved through justice, fairness, and equal protection for all citizens. The association's stance highlights the need for a comprehensive approach to addressing the security challenges in the region.

The incident has raised concerns about the security situation in Plateau State, particularly for Fulani herders who are vulnerable to attacks while traveling to and from markets. The government's response and the efforts of security agencies will be crucial in preventing further incidents and ensuring the safety of all citizens in the region.
