Trading on the Ghana Stock Exchange has surged far beyond last year's pace, with investors exchanging GH₵5.34 billion worth of shares between January and September 2026. This significant increase in trading activity is notable despite the stock market's benchmark index tumbling 6.2% in September alone. According to the GSE's September market report, the GSE Composite Index (GSE-CI) dropped 6.20 percent during the month, closing at 14,141.56 points from 15,076.25 points in August.
The GSE Financial Stocks Index (GSE-FSI), which measures the performance of banks and other financial institutions listed on the exchange, fell 4.43 percent to 7,554.56 points from 7,904.58 points. Despite the one-month dip, both indices remain well ahead of where they started 2026. The GSE-CI has returned 61.24 percent year-to-date, while the GSE-FSI has gained 62.56 percent by the end of September. This indicates that investors who held shares from the start of the year are still sitting on substantial gains.
The equities market recorded 102.98 million shares traded in September, valued at GH₵562.29 million. Compared with the same month in August, the number of shares traded more than doubled, and trading value climbed sharply. Year-on-year growth also shows significant increases, with trading volume rising 123.94 percent and trading value rising 197.05 percent compared with the same period in 2025.
Cumulatively, 1.06 billion shares valued at GH₵5.34 billion changed hands between January and September 2026, representing increases of 75.76 percent in volume and 74.70 percent in value over the corresponding period last year. Market transactions reached 110,395, a 221.65 percent jump over the same period in 2025. This surge in trading activity signals growing investor appetite for local equities.
For ordinary Ghanaians with investments in listed companies, pension funds, or mutual funds that hold GSE-listed stocks, the surge in trading activity is noteworthy. However, the September slide is a reminder that stock prices can swing sharply within short periods. Total market capitalisation itself fell 5.34 percent month-on-month to GH₵270.34 billion from GH₵285.58 billion in August.
Among individual stocks, Digicut Production & Advertising PLC was the top gainer in September, rising 67.86 percent, followed by Cocoa Processing Company PLC, which gained 40 percent. Enterprise Group PLC rose 9.38 percent, Fan Milk PLC gained 5.82 percent, and GCB Bank PLC recorded a marginal increase of 1.14 percent. These gains highlight the varied performance of stocks on the exchange.
The GSE has not indicated whether it expects the September decline to extend into October. The next monthly report, covering October trading activity, will show whether the index recovers or continues its retreat from August's highs. Investors will be watching closely to see how the market performs in the coming months.
