The Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) has launched a market sensitization campaign in Accra, targeting the sale of uncertified mattresses in the city. The exercise, which took place in Makola and Kantamanto, aimed to educate retailers and warn them against selling mattresses that have not been approved by the Authority. According to the GSA, some retailers continue to sell uncertified mattresses despite previous warnings.
The GSA's Greater Accra Regional Manager, Mr. Clement Kubati, emphasized that mattresses can significantly impact one's health and quality of sleep. He noted that while Ghanaians are careful about their food, they often pay little attention to the quality of their sleeping materials. Mr. Kubati explained that some mattresses being sold can easily be folded with one's hands, indicating poor quality.
The GSA's campaign seeks to ensure that only quality mattresses from approved companies are sold to the public. Mr. Kubati clarified that the Authority is not aiming to collapse any business but rather to protect consumers from fake mattresses that could pose health risks. He advised retailers to deal only with approved companies to ensure quality and urged consumers to look out for the GSA certification mark on any good mattress as proof of approval.
The GSA has already engaged some manufacturers and will continue to monitor the market for compliance. Mr. Kubati warned that the Authority's next visit will not be just a warning, and uncertified products will be seized, with offenders facing the law. The exercise is part of the GSA's ongoing efforts to ensure that products sold in Ghana meet the required standards.
Mr. Ebenezer Kofi Boamah, Greater Accra Regional Finance Manager of the GSA, highlighted the importance of the sensitization exercise, especially during this time when parents are buying mattresses for their children to return to school. He noted that some manufacturers use unapproved materials to produce mattresses, which can have serious health implications.
The GSA's market sensitization campaign is an effort to educate the public about the importance of buying certified products. The Authority's goal is to protect consumers from substandard goods and ensure that products sold in Ghana meet international standards. The exercise will continue in other markets to ensure compliance.
The public has been advised to be vigilant and report any instances of uncertified mattresses being sold. The GSA will continue to work with stakeholders to ensure that only quality products are sold in Ghana.
