The Société nationale d'exploitation et de distribution des eaux (SONEDE) has announced a 36-hour disruption to the water supply in several areas of Grand Tunis, starting from October 6, 2026, at 1:00 AM. The interruption is necessary to carry out urgent works to relocate a main pipeline that lies on the path of the ongoing El Marsa flood protection project.

The El Marsa project involves covering the bed of the Oued Et-Tabek, located on Rue Ibn Rachiq in Bahr Lazreg. During the works, teams discovered a 1,000 mm diameter main pipeline that needs to be diverted and reconnected to avoid further delays to the project. The SONEDE has coordinated with relevant administrations to schedule the urgent pipeline relocation work.

The areas affected by the water supply disruption include several sectors in the delegation of La Marsa, such as Cité Bousalsla, Bordj El Houki, Hay Ettabek, Hay El Hakem, Sidi Daoud, and Bahr Lazreg. Additionally, the towns of Kram, Carthage, Cité El Khadra, La Goulette, and La Soukra will also experience water supply disruptions.

In the Kram area, the disruption will affect Le Kram Ouest, Jardins de Carthage, Aïn Zaghouan Nord, and Aïn Zaghouan Sud. The Carthage area will see disruptions in Hay Mohamed Ali Carthage Byrsa, while Cité El Khadra's Lac 1 will also be affected. Furthermore, La Goulette's Le Lac 2, Cité Taïeb Mehiri, Cité El Wahat, Cité Essalama, and El Aouina will face water supply interruptions.

The water distribution is expected to resume progressively from 1:00 PM on October 7, 2026. SONEDE's technical teams will be working on-site to restore normal water supply as quickly as possible. Residents in the affected areas are advised to take necessary precautions during the disruption period.

The El Marsa flood protection project aims to protect the area from potential flood risks. The ongoing works involve several key infrastructure developments, including the covering of the Oued Et-Tabek. The project's progress has been impacted by the discovery of the main pipeline, which requires urgent relocation to avoid further delays.

SONEDE has assured that all necessary measures are being taken to minimize the disruption and restore water supply as quickly as possible. The company's technical teams will work throughout the disruption period to ensure a smooth restoration of services once the pipeline relocation work is completed.
