The Government of Liberia, through the Liberia Airport Authority (LAA), in partnership with the European Union (EU) and the Federal Republic of Germany, has officially launched an €8.6 million aviation safety and infrastructure project. The initiative aims to transform operations at Roberts International Airport (RIA) and strengthen Liberia's position as a regional aviation hub. The project will modernize critical airport systems while ensuring compliance with international aviation safety standards established by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

The European Union is contributing €7.8 million, while the German government is providing €800,000. The initiative is being implemented by the German Development Agency (GIZ). Gilles Matayron, Chargé d’Affaires of the EU Delegation to Liberia, described the initiative as more than an infrastructure development project. He emphasized that Roberts International Airport is Liberia's gateway to trade, investment, mobility, and regional cooperation, and that safe and reliable air transport is essential for economic opportunity and business confidence.

The project will deliver major upgrades across Roberts International Airport, including the installation of modern runway and taxiway lighting systems, improvements to air traffic control, communications and navigation equipment, and enhanced power supply and backup systems. The initiative will also strengthen security screening and wildlife control measures while providing new firefighting vehicles, rescue equipment, ambulances, and emergency medical response tools. Matayron disclosed that the investment directly addresses critical needs in airport lighting, emergency response, airside security, backup power supply, and passenger screening systems.

John Z. Buway, Acting Managing Director and Deputy Managing Director for Administration at the Liberia Airport Authority, speaking on behalf of the institution, said that despite the numerous challenges confronting Roberts International Airport, the LAA leadership continues to demonstrate commitment, strong collaboration, and technical expertise in improving airport operations. Buway noted that among the Authority's ongoing interventions are efforts to improve the airport's firefighting and emergency response capabilities.

The acting LAA managing director further revealed that the Authority's leadership has continued to upgrade navigation systems, recognizing that reliable navigation equipment is essential to aircraft operations, particularly during periods of reduced visibility and challenging weather conditions. He noted that these interventions form part of the Authority's broader commitment to improving operational reliability and bringing airport facilities in line with modern international standards. Buway also emphasized the importance of investing in human capacity through specialized training and professional development opportunities for aircraft technicians, operational staff, and security personnel.

Dr. Tobias Thiel, Director of GIZ African Union, described the initiative as a flagship investment under the European Union's Global Gateway Strategy, which promotes sustainable and high-quality infrastructure development. He disclosed that the project is currently in its inception phase, which runs through the end of November. During this period, technical feasibility studies will be conducted and implementation priorities finalized. Dr. Thiel explained that the project will be implemented under three major pillars: safety and emergency equipment, infrastructure rehabilitation and upgrading, and operational readiness and capacity building.

The project, titled "Action Enhancing Safety and Secure Air Connectivity at Roberts International Airport," complements ongoing efforts by the Authority and provides an opportunity to address some of the airport's longstanding challenges. Buway pledged the Authority's commitment to working with all development partners to ensure that the project delivers tangible, sustainable, and measurable results. He also expressed gratitude to President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, the Government of Liberia, and development partners, including the European Union, the German government, and GIZ, for their continued support and interest in improving Liberia's aviation sector.
