The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has successfully rescued and evacuated several persons stranded by flooding in parts of the Hohoe Municipality. The operation, led by DOIII Bismark Hosu-Porbley, was carried out after floodwaters rose in several communities and locations across the municipality, leaving residents stranded and requiring emergency assistance. Heavy rainfall on Monday, September 28, caused the flooding.
Areas affected by the flooding included Star Filling Station, Picnic, Hohoe Central Zongo, Segbedeme, Kitikpa, and Wegbe. Firefighters responded promptly to the affected areas after the flooding was reported and carried out rescue operations to evacuate people who had become stranded. The affected persons were subsequently moved to safer locations. The GNFS response focused on reaching people affected by the rising waters.
The flooding followed heavy rainfall that caused water levels to rise rapidly in parts of the municipality. Several communities and locations were affected, and residents were left stranded. The GNFS led the rescue efforts, evacuating people from the affected areas and relocating them to safer locations. The operation was carried out by the Hohoe Fire Station.
According to the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Volta Region, the GNFS has urged members of the public to exercise caution during periods of heavy rainfall, particularly in areas prone to flooding. The Service advised residents to avoid flooded roads, drains, and waterways and to move to safer locations when water levels begin to rise.
The GNFS also emphasized the importance of taking early precautions during heavy rainfall, as rising floodwaters can pose risks to people attempting to cross or remain near affected areas. The Service's prompt response to the flooding in Hohoe Municipality has been commended by the affected residents.
The Volta Regional Minister has assured the affected residents of government support. The Hohoe Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) has also appealed for more relief supplies as the flooding displaced residents. The Ghana National Fire Service's swift response saved the situation, preventing further harm to the affected persons.
The GNFS has been actively involved in rescue operations in various parts of the country. Recently, the Service rescued a 35-year-old driver trapped in an overturned tipper truck in the Upper East Region. The GNFS has also received support from organizations such as Polytanks Ghana, which donated water storage tanks to the Service.
