Defending champion Glenrose Xaba is in a strong position to stake her claim on a historic fourth Spar Grand Prix title as the series moves to Pollock Beach in Gqeberha on Saturday. Despite missing a third of the series so far due to international racing commitments, Xaba sits just one point off second place and within striking distance of the top spot with 59 points.

Xaba's recent form suggests she will be exceptionally hard to beat this weekend. Both she and her Boxer Athletics Club teammate, current series leader Cacisile Sosibo, return to local soil fresh off competing against elite international fields at the World Athletics Road Running Championships in Copenhagen, Denmark. Xaba managed an impressive 13th-place finish in the women's half-marathon, crossing the line in 1:07:49 – the second-fastest 21km time of her career.

Sosibo finished 70th in 1:07:49 in the women's half-marathon at the World Athletics Road Running Championships. While Tayla Kavanagh was South Africa's standout performer – breaking the national record in the women's 5km race with a time of 14:51 – she opted to remain in Europe to focus on the track and road season there. Kavanagh currently leads the series with 60 points, one point ahead of Xaba.

The international contingent will also have a say in the competition. Ethiopian threat Selam Gebre, sitting just one point behind Xaba on 58 points, made her intentions clear after chasing the leaders in recent legs. Three-time Grand Prix champion Irvette van Zyl adds extra depth to a stacked field.

Runners will also have to contend with a newly configured course that features a 37m climb before a fast downhill stretch and flat sprint finish. With only the Johannesburg finale remaining in October after this weekend, a victory for Xaba in Gqeberha would completely reshape the leaderboard and put her firmly on course for a record fourth Grand Prix crown.

Xaba brings high-level international sharpness straight to the Nelson Mandela Bay coastline. "I'm ready for Gqeberha and I'm looking forward to enjoying every kilometre," said Xaba. "My preparations have gone well, because I have also been preparing for the World Championships." Sosibo's remarkable consistency – evidenced by her 80-point total built on fifth in Cape Town and fourth in both Durban and Tshwane – makes her a formidable contender.

Key factors that will determine the outcome of the Gqeberha 10km Women's Challenge include Xaba's ability to overcome her recent setbacks, Sosibo's consistency, and the challenge posed by international athletes.
