The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ghana has issued a warning to its citizens regarding a growing trend of fake job schemes that lure them to Zambia, where they are allegedly forced into cybercrime activities. This warning comes after the arrest of six Ghanaians in Lusaka on August 23, 2026, during a joint operation by Zambian authorities. The operation targeted a facility suspected of organized cybercrime and resulted in the arrest of 79 people, including 69 foreign nationals.

According to the Ministry, some Ghanaians were recruited through seemingly legitimate job opportunities, including online data-entry positions, but were forced to participate in online scam activities upon arrival in Zambia. Their passports were confiscated by their employers, leaving them vulnerable to exploitation. The Ghana High Commission in Lusaka received reports of these incidents, highlighting the growing use of fraudulent employment opportunities by human trafficking syndicates.

The joint operation involved the Zambia Police Service, the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC), and the Department of Immigration. The arrested individuals included 10 Zambians and 69 foreign nationals, with the six Ghanaians being part of the group. This incident underscores the risks faced by unsuspecting job seekers who fall prey to these schemes.

In response to this growing trend, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has advised Ghanaians to exercise extreme caution when seeking employment in Zambia. They are urged to thoroughly verify the authenticity of employment offers, recruitment agencies, and prospective employers before traveling. This warning aims to prevent more Ghanaians from falling victim to these scams.

Ghanaians already living in Zambia have also been advised to remain vigilant and exercise caution when responding to online employment opportunities. The Ministry has encouraged them to maintain regular contact with the Ghana High Commission in Lusaka for consular assistance whenever necessary. This will enable them to receive timely support and guidance.

The Ghanaian government has reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the welfare and interests of its citizens traveling to or residing abroad. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is working to protect Ghanaians from these fraudulent schemes and ensure their safety.

The Ministry's warning highlights the need for Ghanaians to be cautious when seeking employment opportunities abroad. By verifying the authenticity of job offers and being aware of the risks, Ghanaians can avoid falling prey to human trafficking syndicates. The government will continue to monitor the situation and provide support to its citizens.
