The Government of Ghana has announced a contra-flow arrangement to facilitate Ayalolo Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) services on major corridors into Accra's Central Business District (CBD). The arrangement, set to take effect from Tuesday, 29th September 2026, aims to improve public transportation, reduce congestion, and provide efficient mobility for commuters. The contra-flow arrangement will operate during peak hours, from 6am-9am and 4pm-8pm.
The intervention will cover three major commuter corridors: Amasaman - Accra Corridor, Adenta - Accra Corridor, and Kasoa - Accra Corridor. These corridors were chosen due to the significant volume of commuters traveling to and from the CBD during peak periods. The arrangement will be implemented on designated sections, subject to approved traffic management and road safety requirements.
The contra-flow arrangement is expected to improve the reliability and punctuality of Ayalolo BRT services, reduce journey times for commuters, and ease congestion on major approaches to the CBD. Additionally, it aims to encourage commuters to use mass public transportation, reduce pressure from private vehicles, and improve overall urban mobility within the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area.
During peak periods, selected sections of the identified corridors will be temporarily configured to allow authorized Ayalolo BRT buses to travel in the priority lane. Private vehicles, taxis, trotros, commercial vehicles, and other unauthorized road users will not be permitted to use the designated BRT contra-flow lanes.
The Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) will provide operational traffic control and enforcement support along the affected corridors. Road users are urged to cooperate fully with MTTD personnel throughout the implementation. The government is appealing to motorists, commercial transport operators, pedestrians, businesses, and residents along the affected corridors to support the intervention.
A press briefing by the management of Ayalolo BRT was held on Monday, 28th September 2026, at 10:00am to provide the general public with more details on this intervention. The government will continue to engage transport operators, road users, local authorities, and other stakeholders to ensure the intervention delivers the intended benefits while maintaining road safety.
The contra-flow arrangement is part of the government's broader efforts to improve public transportation in Ghana. The Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, in collaboration with the MTTD, GAPTE, and DUR, is implementing this initiative to enhance the overall transportation experience for commuters in Accra.
