The National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS) of Ghana has initiated a three-day consultation with key stakeholders in the Bono, Bono East, and Ahafo regions. This engagement, which started in Techiman, Bono East Region, aims to gather views on the development of Ghana's National Security Strategy for 2026-2030. Participants will assess the implementation of the 2020-2024 National Security Strategy and identify emerging security threats.
The Deputy Director of Legal at the National Security Secretariat, Mr. George Loh, addressed the opening of the consultation. He mentioned that similar engagements are being held across all 16 regions to ensure the new strategy reflects the security concerns and priorities of communities nationwide. The consultations seek to gather regional perspectives on security threats, risks, vulnerabilities, and emerging concerns.
According to Mr. Loh, the security challenges facing Ghana have evolved beyond conventional threats and approaches. He emphasized that every Ghanaian is now an important stakeholder in the country's security architecture. Identifying potential security risks at the regional level will enable the Council to develop practical measures to address them and strengthen national security.
The success of the new strategy, Mr. Loh stressed, depends largely on the contributions of stakeholders who understand the security challenges facing their communities. The consultations aim to obtain substantive contributions from stakeholders towards the development of a revised national security strategy. This approach ensures that the new strategy is forward-looking and addresses the country's current security needs.
Speaking on behalf of the Ahafo Regional Minister, Ms. Charity Gardiner, the Chief Director of the Ahafo Regional Coordinating Council, Mr. Joseph Frimpong Naayo, welcomed the initiative. He described it as an important step towards improving security in the regions. Mr. Naayo noted that the Ahafo Region's mining, forestry, and agricultural activities offer significant economic opportunities but also present security challenges that require effective management.
Mr. Naayo urged participants to take the consultation seriously and offer meaningful suggestions to help address existing and emerging security threats. The Ahafo Region's unique economic activities necessitate a tailored approach to security, which the new strategy aims to provide. By engaging stakeholders, the NSCS ensures that the strategy is comprehensive and effective.
The consultation is part of a broader effort to develop a revised national security strategy that addresses the country's current security landscape. With the input of stakeholders from all 16 regions, the NSCS aims to create a strategy that is both forward-looking and responsive to the needs of Ghanaian communities. The new strategy will guide Ghana's national security efforts for the next four years.
