The Ministries Fire Station in Accra, Ghana, recently celebrated its 10th anniversary with a thanksgiving service, highlighting its journey of transformation and leadership. The station's first District Commander, ACFO II Rev. Naomi Ofori Adubea Sarpong, now the Bono East Regional Fire Commander, shared the story of the station's creation, which began with a list of personnel that almost derailed her career. The event brought together past and present personnel, dignitaries, and community partners to reflect on the station's legacy.
According to ACFO II Sarpong, in 2015, she was tasked by her then Deputy Regional Commander, ACFO Veronica Komey, to select about 20 personnel for the new fire station. Unaware that she would be the District Fire Officer (DFO) to head the station, she admitted to making a questionable selection, choosing mostly sportsmen and women and habitual latecomers. Her superior immediately saw through the plan, questioning the selection.
A week before the station's commissioning, the Regional Fire Commander, DCFO Ebenezer Simpson, informed ACFO II Sarpong that she would be the leader of the new station. Despite her initial sadness and concerns, she and her team turned the station into a model of excellence. Her leadership philosophy focused on fostering unity and continuous improvement, making the Ministries Fire Station the number one station in Accra.
During her tenure, which lasted about six years, ACFO II Sarpong emphasized fire prevention and safety, organizing regular training for staff in various ministries, hotels, and schools. The station's efforts significantly raised awareness of fire hazards, earning appreciation from key stakeholders, including Nana Dwamena, the Head of the Office of the Head of Civil Service.
ACFO II Sarpong also established a District Welfare scheme, which is still in operation today, providing loans and end-of-month provisions for personnel. She acknowledged key personalities who helped her succeed, including ADO I Daniel Parry and dedicated drivers like Sub/O Atua. In 2020, her successful tenure led to her promotion as the Deputy Regional Fire Commander for Greater Accra.
The anniversary thanksgiving service also served as a platform for key stakeholders to express their support. Dr Evans Aggrey-Darko, the Head of the Office of the Head of Civil Service, expressed his joy at joining the celebration, stating that he believes the Fire Service is vital for the Ministries and beyond. Other guests included a representative from the Controller and Accountant General's Department and former commanders.
ACFO II Sarpong concluded her speech with advice for the current and future personnel of the station, emphasizing the importance of unity and taking the work seriously. She cautioned against the abuse of power, encouraging personnel to treat one another with respect. The celebration marked a significant milestone in the station's history, with a legacy that continues to impact the community.
