The Akatsi North District Chief Executive (DCE), Bless Katamani, and the Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, Peter Nortsu-Kotoe, have set a goal to eliminate schools operating under trees by the end of 2026. Several classroom blocks have been completed and commissioned across the Akatsi North District in the Volta Region.
The commissioned projects include a two-unit classroom block with ancillary facilities at Kpegbadza, as well as three-unit classroom blocks with ancillary facilities at Nyitawuta, Avevoe, and Hadave. According to Mr. Katamani, these projects are part of the Assembly's efforts to improve teaching and learning conditions. The DCE stated that the Assembly had made significant progress in addressing classroom infrastructure challenges.
Five schools visited as part of the infrastructure programme no longer require additional classroom blocks, leaving only Lomé Ghana School and Nuaxorve Basic School to be addressed. The District Assembly is also constructing Kindergarten blocks for some schools as part of efforts to close the remaining infrastructure gaps. Mr. Katamani emphasized that the objective is to ensure that no school in the district would require a classroom block by the end of 2026.
The provision of permanent classroom infrastructure is expected to significantly improve teaching and learning by protecting pupils and teachers from harsh weather conditions. The facilities will also help safeguard teaching and learning materials from damage and theft. Mr. Katamani noted that the Assembly and the MP remained committed to working together to address the remaining infrastructure needs.
The District Director of Education for Akatsi North, John Badzi, welcomed the projects, describing the provision of classroom infrastructure as critical to creating a conducive environment for effective teaching and learning. He acknowledged the efforts of the DCE and the MP in addressing the infrastructure challenges in the district.
By the end of 2026, the district expects to have eliminated the phenomenon of schools operating under trees and improved access to safe and suitable learning environments for pupils and teachers.
