The Ghana Prisons Service is recruiting through the Centralised Services E-Recruitment Portal (C-SERP), which also handles applications for the Police, Immigration, and Fire services. The 2025/2026 cycle received approximately 390,000 applications across the four agencies, with 71,000 specifically for the Prisons Service. The portal, cserpgh.com, provides a centralized platform for applicants to submit their applications and undergo the recruitment process.

To be eligible for the Ghana Prisons Service, applicants must meet specific requirements. For Senior Officers, applicants must be Ghanaian citizens by birth, have completed National Service, be computer literate, and be aged 18-35. They must also be physically and medically fit, meet the height requirement of 1.68m for males and 1.57m for females, and have an active email and mobile phone number. Junior Officer applicants must be Ghanaian citizens, of good character, and aged 18-32.

The application process involves several steps, starting with purchasing an official voucher through USSD or GCB Bank. Applicants then register on C-SERP, enter their educational details, and upload required documents, including birth certificates, educational certificates, and professional registration certificates. The documents are verified, and applicants proceed to the aptitude test and screening stages.

The aptitude test, conducted online and AI-proctored, has a pass mark of 65%. Shortlisted candidates then undergo documentation and body selection, followed by medical examinations. In the 2025/26 cycle, more than 100,000 applicants passed the aptitude test, and about 105,000 qualified for medical examinations. However, only approximately 5,000 places were available at that stage.

The government has increased the intake, with President Mahama directing that the intake be doubled from 5,000 to 10,000, and subsequently approving a plan to recruit 40,000 personnel over four years. Despite this increase, the overwhelming majority of qualified applicants were left waiting. During the medical stage, more than 4,000 applicants failed the drug test, over 2,000 were disqualified on mental health grounds, and about 1,300 were disqualified after testing positive for HIV.

The Interior Minister has confirmed that the government will not open the recruitment portal for fresh applications in 2027. Instead, the government will draw from the existing pool of candidates who already passed the process but were not called for training. This decision follows a directive from President Mahama and aims to clear the backlog of qualified candidates.

Key requirements for applicants include being a Ghanaian citizen, meeting the age and height requirements, and being physically and medically fit. Applicants must also have an active email and mobile phone number and be ready to undergo paramilitary and physical training. The Ghana Prisons Service recruits through two main streams: Senior Officer and Junior Officer, each with distinct eligibility criteria.
