Ghana's Ranking Member on Parliament's Roads and Transport Committee, Kennedy Nyarko Osei, has expressed concerns over the government's new contra-flow arrangement for Ayalolo buses in Accra. He also suggested the modernisation and expansion of the Bus Rapid Transit system, alongside the construction of more flyovers, underpasses, service roads, and additional approaches to improve traffic flow. These proposals aim to address the root causes of Accra's traffic congestion and provide a more comprehensive solution.
The Akim Swedru MP further proposed stronger control of roadside commercial activities, the development of park-and-ride facilities, and full implementation of traffic enforcement measures. He also called for better management of commercial passenger vehicles' operations by designating locations where their trips should terminate. These measures are intended to reduce congestion and improve the overall efficiency of Accra's transportation system.
Mr. Nyarko Osei also suggested the introduction of alternative transportation systems, including trams in the most congested areas of Accra. This proposal aims to provide commuters with more options and reduce reliance on road transportation. The NPP legislator's proposals have sparked a renewed debate about the best way to address Accra's transportation challenges.
