Manhyia South MP, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, has reported to the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) accompanied by his lawyer, Atta Akyea, amid ongoing investigations. This follows an arrest warrant granted to EOCO by the Accra High Court on September 30, 2026. The warrant was issued due to concerns that documents relevant to the investigations could be concealed, altered, or destroyed.
The MP is being investigated over alleged financial loss and money laundering related to SIC Life Savings and Loans Company Limited. EOCO invited Baffour Awuah in February 2026 as Senior Partner of his law firm, Sarkodie Baffour Awuah & Partners, which was engaged by SIC Life to recover funds. However, the MP has maintained that he has never been the subject of the investigation.
Baffour Awuah's appearance at EOCO is a significant development in a standoff that began in February 2026. The MP had previously stated that he had referred the February 10 invitation to the Clerk to Parliament for advice on February 18, as he had become an MP by then. According to him, a lawful representative of his firm cooperated with EOCO on three occasions and submitted a formal written statement on April 30, 2026.
EOCO disputes Baffour Awuah's account, citing Section 19 of the Economic and Organised Crime Office Act, 2010 (Act 804) in its invitation letter. The Office claims that the attempted arrest at the High Court on September 23 was a lawful step to secure his attendance after he ignored two invitations. The incident drew criticism from the Ghana Bar Association, which described the manner of the attempted arrest as unprofessional.
The MP's lawyer, Atta Akyea, accompanied him to EOCO, along with some members of the New Patriotic Party. Baffour Awuah has explained that SIC Life Savings and Loans had invested about GH¢3.5 million with the defunct Equity Savings and Loans, which defaulted, with the liability growing with interest to about GH¢14 million. His firm was then instructed to recover the amount.
Reports suggest that investigators are probing claims of a 15 percent legal fee arrangement and alleged payments linked to the then management of SIC Life. EOCO has not publicly detailed its specific allegations regarding the recovery. The warrant gives EOCO judicial backing to arrest the legislator and conduct a search and seizure operation for relevant documents.
Another member of parliament from the minority side is also reportedly a subject of these same investigations relating to SIC Life savings and loans. Efforts to reach the MP and EOCO for further comment on the new warrant were ongoing at press time. The case marks a major escalation in the investigations into alleged financial irregularities at SIC Life Savings and Loans Company Limited.
