Ghana's government has taken a significant step towards joining the BRICS economic bloc, with the country's Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, announcing that the Cabinet of President John Dramani Mahama had authorised the move. The decision is part of Ghana's efforts to expand its economic partnerships, attract investment, and strengthen industrial development through cooperation with BRICS countries. According to Ablakwa, preparations are under way to submit the application and seek support from existing BRICS members.

The proposed membership is expected to support Ghana's economic transformation agenda by creating opportunities for investment, job creation, industrialisation, and greater value addition to the country's natural resources. Ablakwa stressed that cooperation with BRICS would complement Ghana's existing international partnerships while expanding its development options. He identified India, Brazil, and China as important economic partners, noting that trade between Ghana and India had more than doubled, rising from approximately $3 billion in 2024 to around $7 billion.

Ghana has already sought India's assistance with its proposed accession, with Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar expressing support for Ghana's aspirations during a visit to Accra. However, Jaishankar emphasised that membership decisions require collective consideration by BRICS countries. The move reflects Ghana's intention to strengthen economic cooperation with emerging economies and broaden its participation in international development initiatives.

The government also intends to use closer cooperation with BRICS countries to develop domestic processing industries and increase the economic benefits derived from Ghana's natural resources. Ablakwa noted that Ghana wants to add value to its natural resources and work with partners that share similar commitments. The planned application is part of Ghana's efforts to accelerate economic development and create new opportunities for growth.

BRICS offers Ghana a platform to engage with major emerging economies and explore new development options. Ablakwa explained that BRICS provides an opportunity for Ghana to have options in development, which is critical for the country's economic transformation. The move is expected to have a positive impact on Ghana's economy, creating new opportunities for investment, job creation, and industrialisation.

Ghana's planned application to join BRICS has been welcomed by some of its international partners. The country's bid to join the economic bloc is seen as a strategic move to strengthen its economic cooperation with emerging economies. The application process is expected to be rigorous, with BRICS countries carefully considering Ghana's bid.

The development highlights Ghana's efforts to diversify its economy and strengthen its international partnerships. The country's government is seeking to create new opportunities for growth and development, and membership of BRICS is seen as a key part of this strategy. The move is expected to have a positive impact on Ghana's economy, creating new opportunities for investment, job creation, and industrialisation.
