The Ghana Medical Trust Fund (GMTF) has announced plans to strengthen diagnostic services in the Central Region by providing advanced medical equipment to two major hospitals. The Cape Coast Teaching Hospital and Winneba Trauma and Specialist Hospital will benefit from the initiative, which aims to expand the hospitals' capacity to diagnose complex medical conditions. The equipment will enable residents to access specialised tests closer to home, reducing travel times and supporting earlier disease detection.

The Cape Coast Teaching Hospital will receive a 128-slice CT scan, a 1.5 Tesla MRI machine, a 3D mammography system, a stereotactic biopsy system, and a fluoroscopy machine. These additions will significantly enhance the hospital's diagnostic capabilities. The hospital will be able to conduct more accurate and detailed scans, leading to better diagnosis and treatment of patients. This development is expected to improve health outcomes for patients in the region.

The Winneba Trauma and Specialist Hospital will also benefit from the GMTF's initiative, receiving a 64-slice CT scan, 3D mammography equipment, a biopsy system, a biochemistry analyser, and an ultrasound machine. The equipment will enable the hospital to provide a wider range of diagnostic services, reducing the need for patients to travel to other facilities for specialised tests. This will not only improve patient care but also reduce the financial burden on patients and their families.

The initiative was announced during stakeholder engagements in Cape Coast, which involved traditional rulers, security heads, MMDCEs, academics, students, medical professionals, and other stakeholders. The engagements provided an opportunity for the GMTF to outline its mandate and ongoing interventions in the region. The meeting was an effort to ensure that the needs of the community are addressed and that the equipment is used effectively.

The planned investment is aimed at bringing advanced diagnostic services closer to residents, reducing the need for patients to travel long distances for specialised tests and supporting earlier detection of diseases. By providing these services, the GMTF hopes to improve access to timely treatment and give more people in the Central Region a better chance of receiving appropriate care when they need it. This development is expected to have a positive impact on healthcare outcomes in the region.
