The Ghana Medical Trust Fund (GMTF) has achieved a remarkable first year, surpassing expectations and becoming a vital vehicle for increasing access to specialised healthcare in Ghana. According to Health Minister Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, the fund's success demonstrates the impact of strategic collaboration between government, healthcare professionals, and stakeholders in addressing the country's pressing healthcare challenges.

The Minister made these remarks at a ceremony marking the GMTF's first anniversary, themed "One Year On – An Evening of Reflection." The event brought together specialist doctors, medical directors, healthcare professionals, and key stakeholders to reflect on the fund's journey and achievements. The Minister commended the GMTF's management, specialist doctors, medical directors, and healthcare professionals for their commitment to the fund's mandate.

The GMTF's progress represents a significant step towards Ghana's goal of achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC), particularly by removing financial barriers that prevent many Ghanaians from accessing specialised medical care. The fund has become an important instrument for strengthening the country's response to complex and chronic health conditions and improving access to specialised treatment.

The Minister emphasised the importance of collaboration among key actors in the health sector to develop practical solutions to healthcare challenges. He urged medical experts and stakeholders to maintain honesty, transparency, and accountability in their engagements with government to ensure that the resources and interventions provided through the fund achieve their intended purpose.

The Minister also challenged the GMTF's management to intensify public education and make the fund more visible and accessible to Ghanaians. He stressed that citizens need to understand what the fund offers, who qualifies for support, and how to access it. Greater public awareness will ensure that the fund's specialised healthcare interventions reach more people who need them most.

The government is strengthening the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) as part of broader efforts to make healthcare more accessible, responsive, and sustainable. The NHIS, along with complementary interventions like the GMTF, forms part of the government's strategy to remove barriers to quality healthcare and move Ghana closer to achieving Universal Health Coverage.

The Minister urged stakeholders to sustain the collaboration, professionalism, and commitment that characterised the fund's first year. He emphasised that the ultimate measure of the GMTF's success is its ability to change lives, save lives, and ensure that no Ghanaian is denied access to specialised healthcare due to financial constraints.
