The Black Star Experience, an initiative under Ghana's Office of the President, has introduced the Black Star Choral Music Contest to discover new musical talent and promote Ghana's choral music tradition. This contest is part of the Music Pillar of the Black Star Experience, aiming to deepen participation across the country. Choral groups from schools, churches, tertiary institutions, and communities will compete at the regional level for a chance to represent their regions at the national finals in Accra.

The Black Star Choral Music Contest will be organized in collaboration with various stakeholders, including ministries, municipal and metropolitan assemblies, traditional authorities, and other relevant institutions. Each region will have a steering committee to oversee the competition, ensuring local decision-making rather than centralized control in Accra. According to Rex Omar, the Black Star Experience Coordinator, this approach will make the contest a truly nationwide initiative, carrying the Black Star spirit into local communities.

Choral music is deeply rooted in Ghanaian communities, particularly in churches, making it an effective way to connect with people at the grassroots level. Rex Omar noted that choral music is broad-based and present in every village, church, and community. By leveraging this existing cultural foundation, the Black Star Experience aims to encourage Ghanaians to take pride in their cultural heritage and identity.

The regional competitions will feature choral groups competing for the opportunity to represent their regions at the national finals. The national finals will bring together 36 groups, representing the winner and first runner-up from each of Ghana's 18 regions. The winning region will be named the Choral Capital of Ghana for one year, accompanied by several benefits. The following year's national final will then be hosted in the winning region.

The Black Star Choral Music Contest is designed to strengthen national unity by using music and culture to bring people together. Rex Omar emphasized that the initiative is not about a particular individual but about Ghana and its identity. By promoting Ghanaian compositions, cultural heritage, and creative excellence, the contest aims to build confidence in Ghanaian identity and strengthen the country's presence in the global cultural and creative space.

The Black Star Experience seeks to encourage Ghanaians to take pride in their culture and identity, whether through music, clothing, tourism, or other aspects of everyday life. Rex Omar noted that anytime Ghanaians express their cultural identity, they are shining the Black Star. The broader vision is to promote Ghanaian cultural excellence and provide opportunities for emerging talent.

The Black Star Choral Music Contest is expected to provide a platform for emerging talent while promoting Ghanaian cultural heritage and creative excellence. By engaging communities across the country, the contest aims to deepen participation in the Black Star Experience and promote national unity. The initiative is a significant step towards celebrating Ghana's rich cultural heritage and encouraging Ghanaians to take pride in their identity.
