Ghana and the Kyrgyz Republic have agreed to strengthen bilateral cooperation in key sectors, following their inaugural Political Consultations held in Accra on October 1. The discussions, led by Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa and his Kyrgyz counterpart, Zheenbek Kulubaev, focused on enhancing economic, diplomatic, and people-to-people relations between the two countries. The consultations identified areas for cooperation, including agriculture, education, and sports.
The two countries have pinpointed multiple sectors for enhanced cooperation, including mining, digital transformation, healthcare, trade, investment, tourism, and emerging technologies like artificial intelligence. These areas of cooperation were identified as part of efforts to strengthen economic and diplomatic ties between Ghana and Kyrgyzstan. The consultations concluded with the signing of three Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) covering sports, agriculture, and diplomatic training.
The sports agreement was signed between Ghana’s Ministry of Sports and Recreation and the State Agency of Physical Culture and Sports under the Cabinet of Ministers of the Kyrgyz Republic. This agreement aims to foster cooperation and exchange in the sports sector, promoting people-to-people relations between the two nations. The MoU on agriculture focuses on cooperation between Ghana’s Ministry of Food and Agriculture and Kyrgyzstan’s Ministry of Water Resources, Agriculture, and Processing Industry.
A third agreement establishes cooperation between the Foreign Service Institute under Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Diplomatic Academy of the Kyrgyz Ministry of Foreign Affairs named after Kazy Dikambaev. This MoU seeks to enhance diplomatic training and capacity building for both countries. During the consultations, Mr. Ablakwa recalled his official visit to Bishkek in March 2026, describing it as a crucial step in strengthening relations between Ghana and Kyrgyzstan.
Mr. Kulubaev expressed appreciation for Ghana’s support for Kyrgyzstan’s successful bid for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2027–2028 term. This development highlights the growing cooperation and mutual support between the two countries at the international level. The two countries also agreed to strengthen coordination on various global issues.
The areas of coordination include UN Security Council reform, international peace and security, climate change, sustainable development, and greater representation of developing countries in global decision-making. This cooperation reflects the shared interests and values of Ghana and Kyrgyzstan as they seek to promote global stability and prosperity. The agreements and MoUs signed during the consultations mark a significant milestone in the bilateral relations between the two countries.
The enhanced cooperation between Ghana and Kyrgyzstan is expected to yield mutual benefits for both nations, promoting economic growth, cultural exchange, and diplomatic collaboration. As the two countries implement the agreements and MoUs, they are likely to strengthen their ties and contribute to regional and global stability. The cooperation also underscores the importance of South-South cooperation and the role of emerging partnerships in shaping the global agenda.
