The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, announced plans to improve sanitation and waste management in Ghana. Speaking at the World Sanitation Day celebration in Accra, he said the government will provide waste bins to households across the country. This initiative aims to encourage households to manage their waste responsibly and keep communities clean. Residents, particularly women and children, should no longer have to walk long distances to dispose of household waste.
The government plans to replace open waste-carrying tricycles with self-loading and self-sealing waste trucks. This proposed system will allow organic and solid waste to be separated at the point of collection and during transportation to the landfill site. Recyclable materials will be recovered, and non-recyclable waste will be properly disposed of. The Minister stated that making waste disposal more convenient would encourage households to manage their waste responsibly.
The government is considering partnerships with corporate organisations to support the maintenance and beautification of streets named after notable individuals and institutions. Companies with strong financial capacity could be assigned selected streets to maintain, including cleaning, street lighting, landscaping, and upkeep of pavements. This initiative will provide an opportunity for companies to contribute to urban development while ensuring that streets are cleaner and better maintained.
The proposed partnership programme could create employment opportunities for thousands of young people engaged in street maintenance under the supervision of relevant authorities. The Minister added that this programme will not only improve urban development but also provide jobs for the youth. The Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, also assured market women that President John Dramani Mahama is committed to improving sanitation in the Greater Accra Region.
During an engagement with traders at Rawlings Park, the Mayor reiterated the Accra Metropolitan Assembly's commitment to working with stakeholders to ensure clean, safe, and healthy market environments. He said the President is determined to address challenges facing traders and improve conditions in markets across the region. The engagement was part of activities marking World Sanitation Day.
