The Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs in Ghana has introduced a contra-flow arrangement for Ayalolo Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) services on three major corridors into Accra’s Central Business District (CBD). This new arrangement, which took effect on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, aims to improve public transportation and reduce congestion in the city. The contra-flow will operate during peak hours, from 6 am to 9 am in the morning and 4 pm to 8 pm in the evening.
The contra-flow arrangement will cover the Amasaman–Accra, Adenta–Accra, and Kasoa–Accra corridors, which are major commuter routes experiencing significant traffic volumes during peak periods. These corridors have been identified as areas where the Ayalolo BRT services will have the most impact in reducing congestion and improving travel times. The arrangement is part of efforts to provide more reliable mobility for commuters travelling into and out of the CBD.
Under the new arrangement, selected sections of the affected roads will be temporarily configured to allow authorised Ayalolo buses to travel against the normal flow of traffic in the priority direction. The designated contra-flow lanes will be strictly reserved for Ayalolo BRT services, and private vehicles, taxis, trotros, commercial vehicles, and other unauthorised road users will not be permitted to use the lanes.
The Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs has collaborated with the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service, the Greater Accra Passenger Transport Executive (GAPTE), and the Department of Urban Roads (DUR) to implement the contra-flow arrangement. The MTTD will provide traffic control and enforcement support at strategic locations and major intersections along the affected corridors to ensure compliance with the new arrangement.
The government expects the intervention to improve the punctuality of Ayalolo services, reduce journey times, and ease congestion on major approaches to the CBD. The contra-flow arrangement is also expected to encourage commuters to use mass public transport and reduce pressure from the large volume of private vehicles on the roads. This is part of efforts to promote a more efficient and sustainable transportation system in Accra.
The Ministry has urged motorists, commercial transport operators, pedestrians, businesses, and residents along the affected corridors to cooperate with traffic officers and support the implementation of the arrangement. The success of the contra-flow arrangement depends on the cooperation of all stakeholders, and the Ministry is confident that it will have a positive impact on the city's transportation system.
