Ghana international goalkeeper Joseph Wollacott has joined Slovak side FC Košice on a short-term contract until the end of 2026. The 30-year-old will compete with Matus Kira and Filip Kalanin for the starting goalkeeper position. Wollacott's arrival comes after the departure of Kevin Dabrowski at the end of the summer transfer window. The club's sporting management identified Wollacott as a suitable option due to his experience and professionalism.
Wollacott has already spent two weeks training with FC Košice. The club's sporting director, Terry Westley, said Wollacott's qualities played an important role in the decision to bring him to the club. Westley explained that they were looking for an experienced goalkeeper who would naturally fit into the environment and culture of their club. Wollacott is a professional in every way and is ready to pass on his experience.
The move to Košice marks a new stage in Wollacott's career, as it is his first opportunity to play outside England. He has played for Bristol City, Forest Green Rovers, Swindon Town, Charlton Athletic, and Crawley Town. Wollacott also spent the 2023/24 campaign with Scottish club Hibernian. Born in Bristol, he represents Ghana at international level and has made 12 appearances for the Black Stars.
Wollacott said the opportunity to move abroad appealed to him due to the prospect of taking on a new challenge and experiencing football in a different environment. He said, "This project appealed to me. I saw that this is a significant club that is moving in the right direction." The goalkeeper has also settled into his new surroundings quickly, receiving a positive reception from his teammates.
Wollacott will now face competition for the starting position as he looks to establish himself within the Košice squad. His immediate ambition is to contribute to the club's objectives while competing for regular playing time. Wollacott said, "I want to play, help the club get to where we want to get together, and I believe that we have a successful season ahead of us."
The short-term agreement runs until the end of 2026, while Košice have the option to extend the contract through to 2027. For Wollacott, the move represents his first experience of playing outside England and another opportunity to build on his career at both club and international level. He will now compete with Kira and Kalanin for the goalkeeper's role as Košice look to strengthen the position for the remainder of the season.
According to TV3 Ghana, Rabbi Adu Agyei reported on Wollacott's transfer to FC Košice. The Ghanaian goalkeeper's transfer to the Slovak club provides him with a new challenge and Košice with an experienced option following Dabrowski's departure. Wollacott's career has largely been spent in England, but he is now set to make an impact in the Slovak football scene.
