A High Court in Ghana has granted the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) a warrant to arrest Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Manhyia South. This development is connected to ongoing investigations into his law firm's representation of SIC Life Savings and Loans. EOCO's lawyers claimed they had exhausted all reasonable means of securing the MP's voluntary attendance, leading to the ex parte motion for the warrant.
The warrant issued by the court allows EOCO officers to arrest the MP, search for, and seize documents relevant to the investigation. This comes after a failed attempt by EOCO to arrest the MP at the Law Court Complex on September 23, 2026, which resulted in a chaotic situation. The MP had sought clarity from the EOCO officer, including her identity as an officer of the anti-graft agency.
Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah has maintained that he has no personal involvement in the ongoing investigation, stating that it relates to his law firm's representation of SIC Life Savings and Loans. He clarified that a representative of his law firm appeared before investigators on March 4, March 18, and April 30, providing the requested information and a written statement.
According to EOCO, the MP is being sought for allegedly charging unapproved legal fees during his representation of SIC Life Savings and Loans. The agency had previously invited him to assist with the investigation on two occasions in February 2026, but he failed to honour these invitations. EOCO took steps to secure his attendance in accordance with the law, leading to the attempted arrest.
However, Mr. Awuah debunked claims that the investigations relate to the legal fees his law firm charged. He pointed out that the legal fees of Sarkodie Baffour Awuah and Partners, as lawyers for SIC Life Savings and Loans, were not paid out of the GH¢ 5,000,000 settlement amount. Instead, the legal fees were separate and independent of the settlement amount.
The MP also clarified that no land belonging to SIC Life Savings and Loans or any other entity was sold in the case, nor was it sold at an allegedly undervalued amount of GH¢ 24,000,000. He emphasized that no money was transferred by SBA and Partners to the MD of SIC Life Savings and Loans at the time as alleged.
The court warrant and subsequent actions by EOCO highlight the ongoing scrutiny of the MP's activities and the processes followed by the anti-graft agency in pursuing investigations. The situation will likely continue to unfold as the investigations proceed and the legal processes are carried out.
