Hundreds of participants joined the AmCham Tanzania Family Charity Walk in Dar es Salaam on 20 September 2026. The event aimed to mobilise private-sector and community support for Tumaini la Maisha, which provides care to children with cancer and their families. Geita Gold Mining Limited (GGML) was among the main sponsors of the event.
GGML partners with the Jakaya Kikwete Cardiac Institute (JKCI) to support access to cardiac surgery for children. The company has identified the health and wellbeing of communities as a core element of its sustainability and community investment strategy. This partnership reflects GGML's commitment to empowering people and advancing societies.
Simon Shayo, Vice President for Sustainability and Stakeholder Engagement at AngloGold Ashanti Tanzania and AmCham Board Member, highlighted GGML's purpose. He stated that initiatives like the charity walk reflect an essential tenet of sustainability and of a future-focused nation and business environment. The theme of the walk, One Walk. One Cause, emphasised collective action to turn individual contributions into meaningful impact.
Andrew Lentz, Chargé d’Affaires at the United States Embassy in Dar es Salaam, addressed participants at the event. He emphasised the scale of collective effort required to advance Tumaini la Maisha’s mission. Lentz stated that it will take all of them to make Tumaini la Maisha’s vision come to life, that no child suffers or dies unnecessarily.
Benedict Busunzu, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) at Tembo Nickel and AmCham Tanzania Board Chair, thanked the organisations that made the walk possible. He expressed gratitude to every sponsor who contributed to AmCham’s drive to support Tumaini la Maisha. The walk is part of a wider effort to mobilise private sector and civil society support for paediatric cancer care in Tanzania.
Access to treatment for children with cancer remains limited for many families in Tanzania. Tumaini la Maisha provides services to children with cancer and their families, working to ensure that a diagnosis does not become a death sentence due to lack of resources or access to care. The charity walk aimed to raise awareness and funds for the organisation's efforts.
The event concluded with a call to action for continued support for paediatric cancer care in Tanzania. The organisers hope that the momentum generated by the charity walk will inspire further collective action to address the challenges faced by children with cancer and their families.
