GEITA Gold Mining Limited (GGML) has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the development of social services in Tanzania through its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme and sponsorship initiatives. The company's Director of Development and Relations, Gilbert Mworia, made this statement during a forum on opportunities arising from GGML's presence at the Ninth National Mining Technology Exhibition in Geita Municipality. The event took place on October 01, 2026, at the Dkt Samia Suluhu Grounds.
As part of its CSR obligations, GGML sets aside 9.2 billion Tanzanian shillings annually for community development projects in Geita District Council and Geita Municipal Council. These funds are used to improve education, health, roads, and water sectors in the region. In addition to the CSR programme, GGML also spends an average of 13 billion to 15 billion Tanzanian shillings annually to support institutions, organisations, the government, and individuals in various areas.
GGML's social responsibility initiatives are designed to support the communities surrounding its operations, thereby maintaining the community's acceptance and enabling the company to carry out its activities peacefully. The company's efforts are in recognition of its responsibility as an investor to contribute to the well-being of the local population. According to Mr. Mworia, GGML's initiatives are not limited to Geita but also extend to various areas across the country.
Some of GGML's notable sponsorship projects include its partnership with the Jakaya Kikwete Cardiac Institute (JKCI). The company has signed a three-year agreement to support children suffering from heart conditions. Additionally, GGML operates a medical services vessel that provides healthcare services to residents living on 10 islands in Lake Victoria, particularly in Geita, Mwanza, and Kagera regions.
GGML has made significant contributions to the development of social infrastructure in the region. The company has constructed over 1,000 classrooms, more than 150 health centres and dispensaries, and has also contributed to the construction and improvement of hospitals. These efforts demonstrate GGML's commitment to supporting the social and economic development of the communities surrounding its operations.
The presence of GGML and mining activities in the region creates opportunities for local traders through the value chain. According to GGML Procurement Officer, Silas Shija, Tanzanian entrepreneurs and business owners can benefit from employment opportunities and tenders offered by GGML by preparing early and meeting the necessary legal requirements.
The government has urged GGML to continue collaborating with government institutions, including insurance companies and social security funds, to establish social security for its employees. Assistant Regional Administrative Secretary in charge of Economy and Production, Dr. Elfasi Msenya, emphasised the importance of such collaborations in ensuring the well-being of GGML's employees.
