A spate of gang-related shootings has rocked the Hanover Park and Bishop Lavis policing precincts in Cape Town, leaving several people dead and wounded. On Wednesday night, a mass shooting occurred on 8th Avenue in Valhalla Park, resulting in one man being killed and four others wounded. The victims, aged between 23 and 34, were reportedly inside a house when unknown suspects entered and opened fire before fleeing the scene.
The motive for the shooting is believed to be gang-related, with police confirming that they are investigating a murder and attempted murder case. In a separate incident, a 32-year-old man was shot dead in Vlamboom Street, Bonteheuwel, at around 9:55 pm. The victim was walking in the road when he was approached by an unknown suspect who shot him and fled the scene. Local ward councillor Angus McKenzie stated that the victim was a known gang member.
According to McKenzie, the escalation of gang violence is a result of a gang war, driven primarily by a big push by law enforcement teams in Bonteheuwel to raid drug houses and confiscate drugs. One gang in particular is reportedly upset about this and is pursuing control of the drug trade by targeting other gang territories. McKenzie encouraged community members to provide tip-off information to help curb the violence.
In another incident, a 29-year-old man was shot dead by unknown suspects in Loganberry Street, Bonteheuwel, in the early hours of Thursday. The motive for this shooting is still unknown, and no arrests have been made. Meanwhile, Philippi SAPS detectives are investigating a murder case following a shooting incident at Surran Road, Hanover Park, where a 28-year-old was shot dead on Wednesday around 10 pm.
Western Cape Minister of Police Oversight and Community Safety, Anroux Marais, has deployed additional LEAP Reaction Unit resources in Hanover Park to respond to the recent increase in gang-related shootings. Marais emphasized that removing illegal firearms is key to tackling gang violence and urged communities to share information with law enforcement.
Marais warned residents not to confront criminals themselves, stating that gangs cannot continue shooting at one another if they are deprived of firearms. The increased enforcement presence on the ground aims to strengthen the response to gang violence and reassure law-abiding residents in Hanover Park.
The series of gang-related shootings has raised concerns about the safety and security of residents in the affected areas. The police and local authorities have assured the community that they are working to address the issue and bring those responsible to justice. The incidents serve as a reminder of the ongoing challenges related to gang violence in South Africa.
