On November 4, 2026, Gabon's Minister of Health, Pr Elsa Nkana Joséphine Ayo épouse Bivigou, handed over a set of new equipment to the anatomical pathology laboratory (ANAPATH) at Libreville's University Hospital Center (CHUL). This donation aims to strengthen the laboratory's diagnostic capabilities and follow-up of suspected cases detected during the Octobre Rose campaign, a nationwide effort to raise awareness and screen for female cancers. The handover was witnessed by the Gabonese Press Agency.
The new equipment is part of a broader effort to enhance the healthcare system's capacity to manage cases identified during the cancer screening campaign. The Minister highlighted that the laboratory has been upgraded with four white light microscopes, which will improve diagnostic accuracy, reduce errors, and enhance the overall quality of care. Additionally, two new medical anatomopathologists have been assigned to CHUL to bolster the laboratory's workforce.
The donated equipment includes a range of essential supplies, such as microscope slides, paraplast for sample inclusion, ethanol, cytobrushes, single-use speculums, staining reagents, examination gloves, lab coats, microscope lamellae, and a H-902N microscope with accessories. These resources will enable healthcare professionals to process and analyze samples more effectively, ensuring better continuity of care for patients identified during the screening campaign.
The ANAPATH laboratory plays a vital role in cancer diagnosis by examining tissues and organs, particularly those related to breast, cervical, and prostate cancers. The laboratory's analysis helps confirm or rule out the presence of cancer cells, guiding subsequent medical interventions. By upgrading the laboratory's equipment and staffing, the Health Ministry aims to improve the overall quality of care and patient outcomes.
The upgrade of the ANAPATH laboratory is a significant step towards strengthening Gabon's healthcare system, particularly in the area of cancer diagnosis and treatment. The Minister's initiative demonstrates the government's commitment to enhancing the country's medical infrastructure and providing better services to its citizens. The new equipment and personnel will help address the healthcare needs of the population, particularly women, who are disproportionately affected by certain types of cancer.
The ANAPATH laboratory's enhanced capabilities will also contribute to a better understanding of cancer trends and patterns in Gabon. By improving diagnostic accuracy and data collection, healthcare professionals will be able to develop more effective strategies for cancer prevention, early detection, and treatment. This, in turn, will help reduce the country's cancer burden and improve overall public health.
The Health Ministry's investment in the ANAPATH laboratory is a positive development for Gabon's healthcare sector. The upgraded laboratory will not only improve cancer diagnosis and treatment but also serve as a model for other healthcare facilities in the country. As the country continues to address its healthcare challenges, initiatives like this demonstrate the government's commitment to providing quality medical care to its citizens.
