The President of Gabon, Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, is set to make a state visit to China from November 3 to 7, 2026, at the invitation of his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping. This visit marks the 12th state visit by a Gabonese head of state to China since the establishment of diplomatic relations between Libreville and Beijing in 1974. The visit aims to strengthen bilateral relations and consolidate the global strategic partnership between the two countries.

According to the Gabonese presidency, the talks between the two leaders will focus on infrastructure, industrial investments, housing, agriculture, fisheries, training, health, and communication. The visit is also expected to explore investment opportunities in the Henan province. This orientation is shared by international relations specialist Arnaud Lilian Bilie, who believes that the visit should enable Gabon to transition from cooperation centered on exploitation to a partnership oriented towards industrialization and added value.

The dynamic of cooperation between Gabon and China was initiated under the presidency of Omar Bongo Ondimba, who made nine state visits to China out of 11 official trips. He remains the Gabonese head of state with the most visits to China. During his 42 years in power, he met four generations of Chinese leaders, from Mao Zedong to Hu Jintao, between his first visit in October 1974 and his last trips.

Omar Bongo Ondimba's first historic state visit to China in October 1974, just a few months after the establishment of diplomatic relations, was marked by his meeting with Mao Zedong in Wuhan. This was followed by eight other state visits in June 1975, May 1977, December 1978, October 1983, February 1987, May 1991, August 1996, and September 2004.

After Omar Bongo Ondimba, Ali Bongo Ondimba continued this dynamic with two state visits to China out of five official trips. The first visit in December 2016 elevated bilateral relations to a "global cooperation partnership," while the second visit in April 2023 consolidated their elevation to a "global strategic cooperation partnership," which is the current framework for this cooperation.

On the protocol level, bilateral state visits differ from multilateral meetings. They are made at the official invitation of the Chinese president and include a specific program comprising a solemn welcome ceremony with military honors, talks between the two heads of state, meetings with ministerial delegations, the signing of bilateral agreements, and a state banquet.

The 12 state visits recorded over 52 years testify to the continuity of exchanges at the highest level between Gabon and China. They also reflect the displayed willingness of both countries to preserve and strengthen their cooperation, particularly in areas that can contribute to Gabon's economic transformation and development.
