The first National Day for Retirees and Elderly in Gabon is being celebrated with a visit by President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema to the Democracy City, where he will meet with elderly citizens. This event is part of a series of activities planned to honor retirees and elderly persons until October 2. The day is an opportunity for the government to assess the situation of retirees in the country and to highlight their contribution to the economy and social life.

The National Day for Retirees and Elderly was adopted during the Council of Ministers on June 25, 2026, and is intended to be an annual event. The day will be used to evaluate the government's policies for retirees, including the payment of pensions and access to healthcare. In 2024, the government allocated 56 billion FCFA to regularize pension payments in two tranches. Additionally, in December 2025, the government validated the disbursement of 6.2 billion FCFA to pay old-age allowances and maternity benefits.

On September 30, Minister of Social Affairs Armande Longo Moulengui delivered a speech highlighting the importance of the well-being of retirees. She emphasized that well-being means receiving a pension on time to live with dignity after serving the nation. The minister also visited construction sites in the Emeraude City with retirees, who welcomed the progress made on the site and expressed their support for President Oligui Nguema.

The celebrations continued with a thanksgiving mass at Saint Pierre Parish in Libreville, focusing on the theme "The well-being of retirees and elderly persons in the era of the Fifth Republic." The event was attended by the minister and her teams, as well as retirees. The day also included a visit to the National Social Security Fund (CNSS) and the Pension and Family Benefits Fund for State Agents (CPPF).

On October 2, a medical caravan will be launched for the benefit of retired persons, and a series of inaugurations will take place. The events are being organized simultaneously in the nine provinces of Gabon. The government aims to provide better living conditions for retirees and to recognize their contributions to the country's development.

According to Minister Armande Longo Moulengui, the well-being of retirees is a priority for the government. She stressed that retirees should not be left alone or isolated in their homes, forgotten by their families and communities. The government is working to improve access to healthcare and social services for retirees.
